Do you folks get seasonal depression and what do you do about it?

I usually get it in October or November and it can stay until January. It usually just hits me one day, a few weeks after it has started getting dark early. I feel sad and whiny and melancholic all the time, more irritable than usually, can't concentrate too well, I contemplate about my life and all the things I did wrong and feel weak and worthless....

I don't really know what I can do about it, if anything. But I hate it so much. It's such BS, getting depressed just because it's dark outside...

My doctor just suggested that I try taking Vitamin D supplements during this time of the year.

It can't hurt.

Yeah, seasonal depression is very real.

Yes, holidays put lots of stress on me.

I can't wait until after New Years! It's my birthday on the 2nd. Things go up from there!

I am already taking Vitamin D since months, because I had a strong deficiency. But tbh, when I started I was feeling good despite the low value, and now I have a higher value and feel much worse. I don't really feel any difference at all.

I don't have problems with the holidays actually. It's just the darkness, I think.

You and me both. I LOVE being out in the dark and have even gone on drives in the middle of the night. It's so calm and peaceful!

Sunlight affects my mood a lot. Without the sunshine, I feel really sluggish and depressed. I need to start taking vitamin D again, my levels have been low in the past and I suspect they are low again. For some reason the government here decided that vitamin D levels are irrelevant, and that they would no longer cover the cost to test them. So I guess I will just supplement blindly without knowing what my levels are since I don't got $51.75 to flush down the toilet several times.

I also have a lightbox, that I have in front of my computer that I use for an hour in the morning if I can. It doesn't help nearly as much as sunshine does though.

High levels of Vitamin D3 and Vitamin A will help in this regard, mushrooms and oranges are full of D3.

One cup of orange juice (fortified with calcium and vitamin D) offers 259 IU of vitamin D. The only vegetable that is naturally an excellent source of vitamin D is the mushroom (canned, raw or cooked). One cup of canned mushrooms (drained, solids only) provides 168 IU of vitamin D; 1 cup of sliced white mushrooms offers 164 IU vitamin D.

I usually feel that way because during Christmastime because I see most of my friends getting together with their families and having somewhere to be. Meanwhile I live too far away from the ones I do clique with. Then there are family members who I don't get along with that I stay away from and it's hard but it's not worth it to get hurt.

Apparently, 10% of people affected by what they are calling "Seasonal Affective Disorder" get it in reverse. I am one of those people.. I get depressed in the summer and EXTREMELY HAPPY when it's about 10-20 degrees and snowing. Sunshine actually makes me feel alone and depressed. Weird, right??

For me it starts October-November and lasts until March-April. I haven't found anything except trying to increase the amount of time I spent out and about, active, and interacting with plants and animals so that I feel brighter and more active no matter how dark it is.
