Seppuku worked like a charm the countless times it's been used, both to kill yourself and to show you don't shrink from absolute agony.

There are many reasons why suicide attempts fail.

There are many reasons why people say they are going to kill themselves.

I still take an expression of suicidal thought seriously....because you never know--that person could be serious!

I don't want ppl to kill themselves. I'd rather they did constructive things but why don't people plan it proper? Is it because they don't really want to die or they think to get help they must make attempts?

If one is desperate enough to want to die one may easily be too desperate to think and plan entirely well.

I am confused why this is in The Haven though. Are you feeling suicidal Starfoxx?

Hmm I guess.
I wasn't sure which board to post this on.
I'm not feeling suicidal, but I do have a pretty solid plan of what I would do if I ever needed to do such a thing. I doubt I will ever need to though. I've been suicidal in the past but oddly it never felt like a bad thing. I won't do that though because there are lots of things I have yet to do while alive. I feel like I should use the life I have well.

But I didn't really want to die either else I wouldn't be here. Just a change and to check out of my situation for a while.

I've come across five 'real life' cases of suicide, two involving relatives, two involving work colleagues, and one other. In each case, there was no warning, the people concerned simply did what they did effectively, and for whatever reason. I'm pretty sure that if I had a serious intention of committing suicide, I would not announce it on the internet or anywhere else (what business would it be of anyone else?), and that I'd carry it out 'successfully'.

I've formed the impression that when people announce in advance an intention to kill themselves, the results are often mystifying and sometimes farcical. I think that some of the people concerned are manipulative fantasists, who may also be dangerous.

Nonetheless, it should also be taken into account that this second category probably includes a much higher proportion of younger people, who may be genuinely disturbed or depressed, and simply have no clear idea what they are doing. On balance, it's probably best initially not to be too cynical, to reserve judgement and to be supportive if one is able to be.

I had an ex-fiancée who committed suicide.

She had made at least three attempts previously; it seemed evident to people who knew her that she was just trying to get attention.

She called me up crying, saying life isn't worth it any more. This was in 1998.

I didn't take her seriously; I thought this was one of her stunts again.

Two weeks later, I got a letter from her mother stating that she overdosed on pills, and died.

I think this is an excellent thread topic.

I don't think it should be deleted.

But if she wants it deleted....then that's what she wants.

Yes, I hope the thread will stay here and continue to be open, even without the original post.

kraftiekortie, that is rough (what your ex-fiancee did). I lost a friend and colleague to suicide. I felt guilty because I had reported her inappropriate behavior to the chairman of our grad school department, which I felt ethically bound to do. She was kicked out of the program and as an elaborate revenge, she blew her brains out just outside the chairman's office. In retrospect, I think this was the beginning of my end in that program, although I dragged the inevitable out for a few years.

I knew it was really not my fault, but I also knew I could have done more to reach out to her. But she had done so much self-injurious behavior that I was just tired of rescuing her and felt a need to distance myself. Sounds like your response to what seemed like just another one of her stunts?

That must have been rough on you! She seemed like an attention-seeker, like you mentioned. Sometimes, people cry wolf too much.

My ex-first fiancée used to pull similar stunts, and made sometimes terrible crank calls to my mother and I.

In the back of my mind, though, that last phone call was different. I reacted to it the same as all the other phone calls, though.

When I received the letter, I felt worse for her mother. I also felt like she might blame me in some fashion. I should have reached out to her--but I didn't. I was just too scared of her reaction to me, and sort of took the coward's way out.

Well we are partners in cowardice then. Such people ultimately are completely alone because they have used up the goodwill of every single person in their universe. My friend was very smart and very determined. The kind of smart that interferes with you ever getting helped, because you can outsmart every opportunity.

I was referring to reaching out to her mother....but not reaching out to HER could have saved her....but I'll never know.

I'm not sure if I could have helped her, even with all which I have learned over 17 years.
