I'm not gonna name any names, but there's this tactless user that's been following me around. He does stuff like pointing out how autistic I seem and he makes fun of my special interests. Today he really hurt my feelings. He really insulted my special interest. Maybe he doesn't mean to be super tactless. This is an autism forum after all. Regardless of his intentions he still hurts my feelings. How can I cope with him?

mebbe ask one of the mods? if they make fun of your autism that veers into ad hominem territory, you may have a valid complaint against them then.

I'm not sure if it's just teasing or actually against the rules. Either way, I'm not sure how to deal with this user. I'm guessing I should ignore him, but I'm often very bored so I don't.

if he actually calls you names or harshly denigrates your mentality [like calling you the R word, for example], for example, that is a personal attack which is against site rules.

He doesn't actually call me names. He mostly just belittles my special interests.

unfortunately then, you will have to just ignore him or better yet, treat him like an upright, furless barking dog, IOW you wouldn't let your neighbor's nasty barking yapping mutt bother you if it barked at you, would you? treat this guy the same way, just tune him out like your neighbor's barking dog.

If someone talking ill of your interests makes you feel that way, then you need more confidence.

Maybe find people who share your interest and help build your confidence.

We can't all like the same things.

I think I know what thread you mean.

I think the user is both curious about the reasoning behind certain things--and is making fun of you a little bit.

I can understand why you would feel this is tactless.

You have your interests. And you also have a certain amount of curiosity. Stick to your guns. The interests can lead to a positive outcome for you.

Would need to see the posts before I could form an opinion. Without this information, all I can say is just ignore the person.

These are your options:

1) Ignore him.

2) Report him to the moderators.

3) Engage in an ongoing flame war across multiple subforums until one or both of you receives a nasty-gram from the mods, a temporary suspension, or a permanent ban.

I strongly recommend Option 2!

I'd just ignore them in the future if it isn't blatant that they're making fun of you where the mods could deal with it. I think I know who you're talking about and what thread, but I'm not sure. I read through that thread two times now and I'm not exactly sure where they're making fun of you, unless it was a few of their choices of words that upset you. You could pm them if you feel up to it, I haven't known that user to be a hostile individual before. If this has been going on for a while though in a lot of your threads, than probably not, just ignore.

I talked to a mod about him. He wasn't just bothering me in that thread. He's bothered me in the past before. Even if it's just me being sensitive I want to figure out how I can deal with him.

Can you tell that person to leave you alone? If not, can you go to the mods and tell them how you feel about that person and see if they will tell that person to back off and to ignore you and to steer clear of you?

Yes I agree, also a feature to only view certain subforums as well. It's already been implemented that only people that are old enough can view the adult forum, I doubt it would be much of a leap to just let people choose what other subforums they did and didn't want to see. I sure many would be delighted to never see Off the Wall or PPR ever again.

certain users that frequent the news, L&D and PP&R threads i'd rather not have to deal with. if FB can do it I wonder why WP can't?
