The current events scare me: people seem to be increasingly guided by fear and hatred. Seems like the world is spinning out of control. Is there any point in carrying on if people are so bent on self- and/or mutual destruction anyway?
To me, it seems like all roads are leading to a new time of war and the motives are mostly economic (defense industry, energy resources, etc) rather than what we are told (religion, culture, etc). I cant help but shake the idea that the majority of people are being fooled by slogans (comparable to Brexit situation: these slogans that convinced so many have since proven to be empty and beside the point) and a black and white rhetoric.
Maybe I'm the paranoid/exaggerating/whatever one, but I dont want to be here if/when ww3 breaks out.

Ther is no need to be afraid. Most people in this world are good people. The bad people in the world want the good people to be afraid but we have to just keep living our lives without fear or the bad people win.

Thanks, it just gets me every now and then. I'm writing a PhD and events like yesterday's - and probably more so the reactions - really get to me and make it all seem pointless. Looking at how the world has changed in the span of a year... will it all even matter by the time of my defense? Will there be a "EU"? Will we care about the economic measures or will it just be about "survival"?

there is no point to anything. it is just all blunt reality. that is good however because you don't get carved up with indecision about any of it

I guess the only decision would be whether or not to continue the charade / ratrace or not .

Sounds like you are mostly upset about Brexit. The most logical solution would be to move to a different country.

The world was never in control. But with the end of the age of cheap energy already being felt, things will not get more prosperous for the common person. I do anticipate more conflict and wars, but it's not really about that, it's more about reorganizing our societies to adapt to a low energy future, no more cars, no more global commerce and cheap disposable goods. The false promises of a wealthy future will leave many people feeling betrayed and desperate, particularly political conservatives who's delusion is rather more entrenched. People will strike out at scapegoats - minorities, immigrants, globalism, democrats, secularism. But I think it will all be for the best in the end. We will be forced to create sustainable, locally oriented communities and know our neighbors better. We will do more necessary work and see the results of our own efforts.

I remember you were going for your PhD.

It's a pity that we have to deal with this crap in the world.

It's all because people misapply the teachings of Islam. It's because people listen to fanatics who have many delusions up their sleeves.

Sorry, I wrote this at a very low point. It was more about the Nice attacks (a few people I knew witnessed it) and just the growing sense of hostility all around. Yes, fear of losing even a sense of control in society - albeit a false one.

Kraftie: one more year so I'm sure that it's simply the overwhelming stress that is getting to me *oops*. In any case the line between being ok and low points is getting thinner and thinner. But that's probably also because of situations within the family and circle of friends...
