WTF is wrong with me???
I've made the most stupidest social faux pas today, something a very stupid person would do. I am so f*****g dumb it's unbelievable. I could kick myself. Or kill myself.
So at work we are short-staffed lately, and I have done extra days to help out, but I don't feel like doing any more for now, and they keep asking us to, and I feel guilty if I say no. So I decided to think of a good excuse to get me out of doing extra days.
Right, to cut a long story short, I fibbed to my colleague that I am claiming council tax at my boyfriend's and would not be able to claim any more if I worked over the limit of hours a week. All that is a fib, I'm really NOT claiming anything. But I didn't think it through, because my colleague got concerned and told me that claiming council tax when my partner works full-time is fraud.
That is not the issue, as I am not really claiming anything. The issue with this is that the lie I had told is absolutely stupid, and now I'm worried my colleague might not like me any more because I'm committing a fraud (well, she THINKS I am, as that's what I fibbed to her). I tried to tell her afterwards that I was just joking and that I'm not really claiming anything, but obviously that will be hard to believe now from her viewpoint.
How do I prove to her that what I said about claiming council tax was just a lie and that I'm not really frauding anything?
Yes I know the lie is idiotic. Please don't badmouth me about it because it won't help how I'm feeling right now. It was just a stupid mistake, something I shouldn't have made up, we've established how stupid I am. I now need to get this straight again, because I'm scared of losing my friend's respect over something that isn't even true.
I am a f*****g useless idiot, please don't rub it in. ![]()

Just say you had to ring citizens advice and ask properly and now you aren't claiming it anymore because you didn't understand it properly. "Sorted that council tax business out last night, bloody pain in the arse. Rang citizens advice and they said I'm not supposed to claim if I'm with my boyfriend so I've cancelled it since I didn't know" Something like that.
In future, say that you can't because you have to babysit a relatives child for days at a time as the parents go away for work, they won't question babysitting.
If they ask you again after you say that just say "I couldn't go anyway cause I'm babysitting."

Thanks for not making fun.
What you suggested does sound believable. Maybe I could do that. I do hope it puts everything right and that it all blows over.
Saying about babysitting a friend's child sounds good, although I'm not sure I should keep making up lies. I am thinking of doing some voluntary work somewhere, on my day off, to get some experience in order to get into a job I really want (because I don't like the job I'm in now, hence why I don't want to do extra shifts). So that would be a good reason, and there's no money involved.

Well you lied and this is one reason why it's generally not a good idea, and now you know that. I think the best thing to do would just be to not bring it up again, and in the future, remember, you don't need to provide people with an explanation as to why you can't work hours you aren't yet scheduled to work. In fact, you don't always need to provide people with an explanation for your actions or decisions in general.
I'm never going to make up stories again. White lies are OK, but not making up stories like this one.
But I think it will all be brought up again tomorrow at work because I texted her after work Friday to correct the lie so that I wouldn't have to worry about it all week-end, but she never texted back, and she's always looking at her phone, so I think she thinks differently of me from now on. The real truth sounds more like a lie than the lie does. ![]()

Just tell her you panicked and thought of an excuse not to do anymore hours, because you didn't like to say no to it. You can just tell work you have plans already if you want to get out of it. It's not like they're going to be demanding to know your schedule away from work.

That is a good thing to say. And it's true too, because I did panic. I don't mind doing a bit of overtime on a Saturday morning or something, but I do like to have my Tuesdays off to myself. It's the only day I can get things done.

Just tell them that, it's completely reasonable. It's all a bit of give and take. I'd rather have a weekday off sometimes, everything's open etc.

Well I mean if you're gonna lie then just go with babysitter stuff in future. It's alright though you didn't like kill someone or something lol, everyone lies. Pretending no one ever lies about stuff would be irrational. It's just one of lifes weird social things don't stress about it so much. You're good.
Also, I doubt anyone would make fun of you for this especially as you posted in the haven which is the more serious sub forum. If they did then they'd be considered a complete child worthy of moderator attention, only children make fun of others who haven't done anything deserving, which you haven't.
Good luck with it and feel better soon.

Thank you for the positive and helpful replies. It's made me feel better already.
What I meant about making fun is I was afraid of some responses I might get, something like "you're right, it is a stupid thing to do" followed by this emoticon ---->
, which isn't very helpful.
