My best friend from high school moved across the country a year or two ago and she seemed to be doing well, then she went dark on social media for a while and now she just posted a picture of a bridge and said something about this being her last goodbye. It looks like she had difficulty typing it because there's a lot of spelling errors and it's hard to understand. I'm sick to my stomach. I called her but it went straight to voicemail.

I think it's important to try and contact someone in her family or a local friend of hers that you can see on fb.
You have to take people who say things like that seriously. It's her fault if this is a joke, it's not funny if it is. But definitely try to talk to someone even if you have to call a suicide hotline. Maybe they can help somehow or know the right strategy.

Her father has been asking her to call him so he's had no luck either.

Perhaps call others who may know where she is or who can help find her? If her parents are aware then perhaps they have already contacted the police for help.
Are you in contact with the parents or just reading social media posts?
I'm sorry you are going through this. I hope all is well.

I don't know her parents well so I'm not sure how they'd react to me asking them questions when they're already worried to death. My friend and I don't talk much on social media because we're both busy. I just took a walk and called Mom so I'm not as anxious now. I said a prayer and now I guess I should try to get to a point where I can sleep. Like that's gonna happen.

Update: The police were called, they got a warrant from her landlord, so there are local people hard at work trying to find her.

Thank you for the update. Being a parent , from my perspective, they would appreciate each person who reached out to them. Even to let them know you have sent a prayer. Your thoughts give them strength to get through such a terrible time. Please keep us posted.

Oh God. I cant find anything about her on social media at all. I've looked everywhere. It's like she never existed. s**t.

Edit: I found her account but it's deactivated. I have no idea why. Nobody's telling me anything. Of course it's 3 AM and I'm the only one awake because I'm stupid.

She jumped off the bridge onto the highway. She wasn't hit by any cars but she died in the hospital. I'm going home for the weekend.

That's terribly sad and especially for you, as a best friend who did all you could do. I know this kind of loss can take a long time to come to terms with. Be especially kind and gentle with yourself, and try to focus on the best memories of your friend to honour her now.

I'm very sorry that your worst fears came through.

Please accept my condolences.

It's another example of a lesson I learned: always take overtures like that seriously.

I lost a good friend through suicide; she took an overdose. I'm not sure---but maybe if I had taken her more seriously, this might have been prevented. She had attempted suicide previously many times.

I said that in order to illustrate the lesson I learned. I know you took your friend's plight quite seriously.

It's always a waste, suicide.

Damn, only 20 (assuming she was in the same grade as you), not even old enough to drink/gamble. It sounds like she was having a difficult time, and she wasn't telling anybody, and she was away from all her support systems which is a necessity for most NT's who go through hard times. A lot of very young adults will move to a big city on a lark without any real plans or strategies and quickly find themselves in over their heads. I've heard at least one story of a 19 yo woman who flew to Atlanta from some hole in the wall prairie town on a lark because she'd never been to a big city. She met some guy on CL and was going to live with him. She got kicked out in a month, and then decided to earn cash as a "CL hooker" because she didn't want to go back to the prairie. She disappeared and was never found. When someone is 20 they don't really understand the First Rule of Holes: When you're in one, stop digging. I hope you can comfort her folks a little bit this weekend.
