I'll have lived in my apartment for a year come next month, when my lease ends. It's a decent place and I like living here. It's only a ten minute drive from where I work. Thing is, there are at least five different apartment complexes that are are the same street as my office. A couple of them are out of my price range, but the rest seem affordable. They're even owned and built by the same company so the interior will probably be identical. I'm having trouble decided if it's worth it, though. I *am* happy living where I am, but the idea of living literally two minutes from work, not to mention being closer to town, sounds awesome too. But there's also the risk of getting a bad landlord, bad neighbors, poorer living conditions, etc. What do you guys think? Is a move across town worth considering? How do I weigh the risks and benefits for something like this?

A "normal" person would ask their co-workers to see if anyone else lives in one of those nearby apartments.

One other thing I'm worried about is the timing. I've called some of them and they say that they won't have any openings until June or July. My lease ends in April, which means I can either sign another lease for six months or one year, or start paying rent month-by-month. That would let me move out as soon as I was ready, but they raise the rent significantly for that.

Shortening your commute is proven to reduce stress and increase quality of life. I'd say go for it! Use all the time you'll save on your special interest. :) Here's a thing you can try: go to Craigslist and search for apartments for rent (it will offer you choices of thumbnail, gallery, or map results.) Click map, and focus down to the few blocks around your work. It will show you everything that's advertised right now, so you can preview before you call.
