As I write this, my mother is in the hospital for the first time in 3 1/2 years because of low "totals" from her latest cancer appointment. While I'm confident she'll be home in the next day or two, it has gotten me contemplating about when me and my older sister will eventually be tasked with either caring for my Mom and Dad ourselves or putting either or both of them in an assisted living facility or such. I value my family as much as the next person, and I dread the day they will eventually pass on.

Praying for your Mom, your Dad, you, and all your family ...

Thank you; she could be out of the hospital by the weekend. However, I did address the possibility of having to provide care or, in the short term, helping out with chores around the house and such.

You'll get through the time when they are all gone. Trust me. It sucks, but it's the natural order of things and you'll be more OK than you think.

Start thinking and talking with them about it NOW if you think you will be providing or overseeing their care. I cannot stress this enough. Start planning NOW. NOW, NOW, NOW. It won't be easy to talk about. Do it anyway. It's easier than trying to figure it out as you go when it hits you in the face.

When it's all said and done, knowing you did you best for them will be more of a comfort than you'd believe.

You may also want to consider the option of hospice care.

I have more experience than most people would like concerning hospice care.
Paying for long term care is a big issue there may not be much government assistance where you live.

Most insurance plans don't cover assisted living so unless your parents have enough of a retirement fund to cover one of these facilities, if needed, you should look into long term care insurance.

I tried to talk to them last weekend, but they said don't worry about it ... yet.
