For the last two weeks my partner has been coughing more than usual. He's always had a cough because he's been a heavy smoker for years, but lately he's been coughing even more. He's been coughing throughout the day and having fits of coughing a few times each night, and he is all blocked up in his nose and chest, and his sinuses get more blocked when he has a fit of coughing. But he says it's not a cold, and he doesn't look like he has a cold anyway. He doesn't feel unwell at all.

Right now we are away on holiday, but his chronic coughing is worrying me. My ears hurting from the loudness and pitch of his coughing is one thing, but I'm more worried about what could be wrong with him. He's going to see a doctor if he's still coughing like this when we get home next week.

I'm hoping the coughing is some sort of a virus, or an allergy, or maybe his lungs trying to get rid of toxins in his lungs or something else not sinister, but I can't help assuming the worst. He actually hasn't been smoking for about two weeks, but I'm still spending our break worrying. He says not to worry, but I can't help it. Why oh why does smoking have to exist among humans?

I don't smoke.

I've been coughing for two weeks after catching a cold. It's worse when I lie down at night.

Did he have a cold two weeks ago?

maybe he needs some Ricola cough drops...lol, sometimes I get a bit of cough from smoking as I can't attribute it to anything else, but those cough drops can help sooth the irritation. Obviously cutting down or quitting smoking is healthiest but still ricolas help with smoking coughs at least in my experience.

Probably bronchitis. A lot of smokers get it in the winter. It can clear up on its own, or it can turn into pneumonia. Your plan about going to the doctor when you get home is good.

His cough is actually nearly gone now. He's just having small fits of coughing about 3-4 times a day, which is nothing compared to what he was, and he's not coughing in the night.
