Why? What is the use? What is the gain? Why destroy the miracle of life? Why have a world war if using a nuclear bomb will wipe out the whole world population and nobody wins? Isn't the whole point of war is to win?

I hate living a life of threat like this. What if a nuclear bomb is being lit right now? I don't want to die. :(

Mutually assured destruction is quite the war deterrent.

The only legitimate use nuclear arms have is to prevent nuclear arms from being used. Their very existence is an unfortunate phenomenon, but unless there's a way to simultaneously wipe them all from existence along with the tech needed to build them, there's always the risk that someone somewhere is going to have a nuke that they can use. The only thing that can deter a nuke is another nuke.

an uneasy peace granted by MAD is preferable to the bloodshed of conventional warfare, at least to me.

there is absolutely no reason for any state to use a nuclear weapon in today's world. i like to think of them as an unfortunate holdover.

drama aside, the international scene is far, far different than it was on those days in 1945.

one nuke can spoil an atoll for a while, but it won't kill everyone. i have enough faith (please don't let it be misplaced) in the world left to believe that if a nuclear weapon were to be used in war, it would be local (thnk india/pakistan) and not a global hellfire

meet objectives, gain land, secure borders, etc etc. repeal an invader who wishes to do the same. generally, the less casualties you suffer, the better. i'd say, the whole point of war is to end it as quickly as possible.

there's been over 2500 nuclear weapons detonated. i guess you and i are lucky to be young enough that we don't remember a time where such fears were more commonplace.

why do you think a nuke would be used right now? i don't mean to be rude, this is sincere. what events, happenings are triggering these fears?

people have been living under threat since time immemorial, and i believe that is something that will never change....

I just worry about what's going on in the world right now. People say that these days, nuclear bombs are powerful enough to destroy mankind and kill every being on the planet. But what frightens me the most is if it doesn't kill everybody, the radiation will, and dying from radiation poisoning is worse than dying in less than a second.

am quite sure they have been that way for several decades, actually.

ready-to-use nuclear stockpiles throughout several states have actually shrunk quite a bit since the peak years of the cold war i believe....though i'd appreciate some fact checking.

i worry too, though use of nuclear weapons specifically, doesn't seem any more likely than it did in the 60s. personally, the fear of a terrorist attack is what gets me shaking, much more.

do you fear terrorist attacks, as well?

clearly it depends on how many weapons are being used. but you're right that radiation and fallout are very, very nasty killers.

this is just me, but if i knew that a nuke was about to fall on my area, i'd hop into my camry and race TOWARDS the blast instead away from it. i'll take vaporisation anyday

i'm sure some remote unicellular extremophiles would survive a nuclear holocaust....

I heard that the intended use for nuclear bombs were to blow up huge asteroids heading toward Earth, so we can avoid something like what wiped out the dinosaurs. That humans right now are misusing it.

the technology and logistics to send controlled rockets/missiles large enough to carry warheads capable of blowing up asteroids deep into space, wasn't really there until after nukes themselves had already appeared....so.

not sure where you got that from.

i'm sticking with japan and germany, myself.

You need to kick that person's ass who told you that. Because they caused you to look like a moron in public by prompting you to post his. Lol!

That wasn't why they invented nukes, nor why they continued to stockpile them during the cold war, continue to stockpile them, nor why additional countries are trying to get nukes (like Iran).

However...

That is an UN intended good by product of the nuclear arms race. We now have thousands of nuclear warheads lying around available for use if a stray asteroid comes at the earth. The nukes could be sent by rocket to either pulverize the asteroid, or to redirect it so it plunges into the sun, or outward out of the solar system, and away from the earth.

But here on earth, if the asteroids don't get ya, the supervolcanoes DO! All of the nukes in the world wont stop the Yellow Stone supervolcano from turning us all into toast. We cant do squat about supervolcanoes

Oh well.

Terrorist attacks frighten me too. There's been another one in the UK last night, in Manchester. It seems to be becoming more frequent now than ever. Every few months I log into Facebook in a morning and find all these "our thoughts are with all the people and their families involved in the terror attack in [name city/country here]" posts and links, and I'm always like "now what's happened?"

it's a legitimate concern, because there's a lot of countries and organizations that are weak and desperate to expand - north korea, ISIS - and those are threats people take very seriously. both of them are so full of hate and last week's attack showed they'll stop at nothing (literally, nothing) to get what they want. and the fact that north korea has the technology, and the tensions they have with other countries is already really high.. it's a terrifying thought. :|

Humans since the beginning have been constantly working on bigger and deadly ways to kill each other. Nukes are the result of that until something worse and bigger is invented.

It's a big stick to wave around at those who also possess a big stick, and to hold up in the sunshine and cast a shadow of it over those who don't possess a big stick.

If Corbyn had got in I wonder if all his sympathisers would be worried. For the sake of the country I'm glad that Theresa finally got those seats. Her pulling power at the moment seems to be magnetic.

I'm pretty terrified at the thought as well. Not only, but if a nuclear bomb was detonated at a high above ground level, it could knock out all modern infrastructure, appliances, cars, power grids, etc. That would be the scariest scenario and I wouldn't find life to be worth living anymore after that. In the United States, 9 out of 10 Americans will die in a very short time. I share the same fear the OP does.

Modern days are more peaceful...my @ss. Besides it only seems to be atheists/progressives that think that (no offense, I know there are both progressive/liberal and conservative atheists).
