Being someone who was diagnosed with Severe Depression as well as still being tested for schizophrenia, I've been trying to go to more social gatherings, as well as trying new medications, but they never seem to work, and side-effects tend to be dime-a-dozen. At this point I've been heavily considering trying to stay at a psychiatric ward with how bad it's gotten, but all I keep hearing and seeing from stories of people staying at them is how it often leaves you more miserable in the end, without any new outlets as well. I really don't know where to go with it anymore, it almost seems like it's not worth anything anymore too.
So you have tried medications but they never seem to work. And have considered staying on a psychiatric ward but have heard from others it often leaves you worse.
You don't know where to go. That sounds really tough. I would recommend you listen to your instincts. If you're afraid of the psychiatric ward, well, fear exists for a reason! It's to protect us from harm.
Is there anything else you can think of that might bring a positive change to your life? I do believe you're a worthwhile individual. Are you perhaps trying too hard to be a round peg fitting into a square hole? Maybe there is a need to do different things that more suit your nature?
Are you under psychiatric care, even if you aren't in a ward?
A psychiatrist may be needful there, if you have schizophrenia in the works. I know where I am there are outpatient / day programs for people who are not a danger to themselves or anyone else at the psychiatric ward at the hospital, and some people find that easier - they're not confined, so they can have their outlets as you put it if they need to, but they do get more support than just seeing a therapist once a week.
Perhaps you're not ready to start socializing yet, and that's why it seems to be not working? Perhaps you need to sort yourself a bit, before you can start successfully interacting with others?
Medications - yeah. The side effects can tend to be worse than the illness. You may be able to reorder your life to deal with the depression without medications, but if there is schizophrenia - it may be a necessity. I've known some schizophrenics who were completely fine on medications, but off them, they went completely batshit.
