Well, I tend to prefer writing down my thoughts and feelings as I like to keep a record of the mess of a mind I have...but it's such a pain to do it constantly and sometimes it's hard to keep up so I tend to slack.
At the moment I do have a journal that I make notes of all the times my mother has been cruel to me as a way to expel my anger and repent on my suicidal thoughts, but I only really put stuff in it when I feel like it... sometimes I'm too furious during a moment to be able to sit still and write out that particular event.
I also had been keeping a dream journal but that became a thing where I was writing tons of paragraphs each day after I awoke because my dreams were so detailed and long.
Either way, I can get my thoughts and feelings out better through text most of the time, so I have no problem with it personally. Just gets tedious.
I'd say, do whatever best works for you. There are many ways to gather thoughts. Some do meditation for example.
