I have the same, my brain doesn't necessarily pick out the relevant bits that people are trying to share with me so I end up making an inappropriate or random response. I'm rarely able to sympathise or understand when people are asking for support and so I might start humming a pop song as I mull over all the wrong bits. When I do this its usually better to own it and say
"sorry my brain is full of holes isn't it? I'm like a goldfish!".
It's an emotional blindness also leaves me vulnerable so I don't see the point in being down on myself about it, when it happens I just ride it and stay with the innocence of my intentions.
That's a great attitude!
When I make ASD related mistakes, and I do - oh, I do, I get frustrated with myself.. but then I try to remember to stop and forgive myself for mistakes made beyond my control in the moment. It's difficult sometimes, but I have to do it so I can move forward vs. get stuck dwelling on one f**k up or another and allow it to ruin more than just the moment it happened in.
