I'm having a small crisis.

Today I was watching a YouTube show where two guys play videogames together and occasionally talk about deep/emotional things. One of them mentioned that he's had low self-esteem for his whole life and still does, even though he's taken steps to be more confident. And this is also a guy who owns and/or runs a successful business, has a lot of supportive friends including a lovely wife, and a legion of loyal (albeit easily angered) fans. Yet self-doubt and similar negative thoughts are still something he struggles with.

Does this mean that, even if you achieve everything you've dreamed of, it's impossible to stop feeling like you're a failure once you've started? Isn't the whole POINT of achieving life goals to give you a reason to feel satisfied and happy with yourself? If that doesn't work, then what's the point of accomplishing anything?!

No, it doesn't mean that.

This person on the YouTube video sounds like he/she would not be satisfied with anything, nor content with anything. This person wants MORE, MORE, MORE.

I can't live like that.

I'm not rich. I'm not accomplished. But at least I can like beautiful things, and like them for free.

I'm satisfied with that.

Well some people are happy when they achieve their dreams and others have deep-seated psychological issues that can never be resolved no matter what, only lessened. Doesn't mean you shouldn't bother trying to achieve your goals. I'm guessing he feels better than he used to.

Some people are never happy. Success as they know it has eroded their souls.

Just because people achieve goals doesn't mean they're no longer human and it's impossible for them to feel depressed or anxious.

Look at how many highly successful celebrities have committed suicide, for example.

Then there are people who are happy as pigs in s**t their entire lives, and they have NOTHING, no money, no material possessions, low education, no major life achievements etc.

Happiness comes from within, not from life achievements, milestones, awards etc. People who achieve a lot in their lives may very well also be very happy, but, they could be sad. People who achieve very little could be very sad, but, they could be very happy.

Accomplishing goals != eternal happiness for the rest of one's life. It simply means that goal was achieved, that's it, that's all. Sure, most people are happy with achieving goals, but doing so does not guarantee one happiness for the rest of their life. That's a fallacy perhaps most believed by people looking at them from the outside thinking they MUST be happy because they've achieved a thing in their lives.. but you'd only think that if you didn't know that happiness is a result of the quality if your thoughts & is entirely internal and independent of external life achievements.
