Does anyone here know what supported living is like? Or perhaps having a services worker help you out with grocery shopping and other such things? I dont think I belong in a group home. Im currently living in a boarding house. A big house that is shared with 13 other people. Its not staffed. Sometimes it drives me nuts here because people steel and there are rats running around in the kitchen.

I also think just living in an apartment would suck for me because disability doesnt give me that much money. I cant work. So I wonder if supported living would some how help m with my finances. Like what if I run out of soap and I dont have any money? Could the support worker or services worker buy me soap? Where Im living now everything is included. Thats why Im afraid to move out on my own. Im afraid Ill run out of money if I do.

I think that, at the very least, you should have a social worker. He or she would be able to help you apply for services that could help you a lot.

Have you applied for low income housing, Section 8, and food stamps?

I have no idea what section 8 is because I live in Canada. I will probably stay in this boarding house forever because it has free wifi. I already have a community support worker that helps me out with certain things.

Im worrying because the soap I need to buy is so expensive. I have sensitive skin so the only soap that has ever worked for me is Dove. Jerkins was a good alternative but they dont sell it anymore where I live.

Im afraid people will steal the soap I leave in the bathroom to wash my hands. If I have to keep soap in my room Ill go insane carrying it back and forth all the time.

Have you tried Ivory? I've always liked that soap.

I have always used Dove, too, for my sensitive skin.

I’m not sure what programs there are in Canada. Sometimes, if you’re low enough income in the US, you can get some additional welfare to cover the cost of things like toiletries.

Ivory is like acid on my skin.

Im going to keep my handwashing soap out but the moment someone steals it Ill start keeping it in my room.

I'm troubled by those rats in the kitchen. Rats carry disease. I encourage you to contact the Public Health department for your city or county.

Other than that I'll let other Canadians address your questions about support, since my answers are likely to be wrong.

We have traps set and that seems to be killing them. Since this is an old house I think we will always have them.

I miss the country side. I wish there was some way to make life more fullfilling but I havent figured out how yet. I have things to be greatfull for at least.

At the rate my general well-being is deteriorating, I may soon be trying to find assisted living. I no longer drive, by choice, since that piece of junk Ford Escort I was driving had the entire exhaust system fall off, and I have had enough of throwing bad money after good. Besides, my eyesight has been getting worse. I’ve also been having more difficulty walking or being on my feet for any length of time, without my lower back pitching a fit (mostly due to pinched nerves,, which an orthopaedist diagnosed me with when I was evaluated for carpal tunnel syndrome. What used to take me 15 minutes to walk to the nearest supermarket (about 1/4 of a mile away) or to Rite-Aid (about a half mile away), now takes me almost 90 minutes, since I end up having to sit down between the house and the supermarket.

Hey, a question about your signature block - how does one know if one is on your Foes list? I seriously do not understand how that works. If someone is on your Foes list, can they PM you?

As to your general decline, seriously assisted living? That's for people not capable of self-care and who might do things like forget to eat, leave the stove on and burn down the building, etc. It might make more sense to get into a building for over 55 and disabled folks that has sliding scale rent. I am beginning to use grocery delivery and may soon start to use pharmacy delivery too. While it might not be available in York Twp, certain larger cities should have something like that.

I'm sorry about your pain. I've become very grouchy since my general mobility impairment was worsened by a broken ankle. It hurts! Plus I can't drive.

And now, back to Sarahsmith. :)

In the U.S. assisted living workers take people to and from errands and help them determine what bills are to be paid and make appointments and so on. They do not use their own money or department money to buy goods for their clients.

Is there any way you could get a part time job to suppliment your income?
