Job first or place to live first?

I'm trying to figure out how to get out of this situation I am in. We talked to some people in Lansing who thought we need to find a new place to live first (preferably income based) then worry about our money situation.

My last AmeriCorps position was a good idea because it doesn't interfere with my current benefits, but the physical part to it and the relocation made it fail. I did however see an advertisement for AmeriCorps positions that are so close to where I live now no relocation would be necessary. They are 11 month positions starting in September. They pay a little more than the one I had too. But it's not Environmental Education, it's leading after school clubs in STEAM topics (science technology engineering arts and math) Im fighting right now to keep my SSI and my husband has a hearing next month to get his and if we both get SSI and I got this AmeriCorps we'd be pulling in every month about 2200 dollars far surpassing our current 750 and then we might be able to do better???

I really don't know what to do though but I know things just keep going downhill.

I wonder if you have considered jobs that would be underemployment, but at least might help you get away from the living situation at your uncle's. It's a good idea to apply for jobs you really want, but you should also apply for jobs that would meet your financial needs. Relocation might require more cash than you have upfront, since you won't draw pay immediately.

Talk to your people at SSI about how much pay you can earn without losing your benefits. I would also recommend you look into your state's Vocational Rehabilitation agency to see if they can help you find employment. Maybe this has been suggested in the past; I can't remember, sorry if I am repeating earlier advice.

From my experience, many people tend to move with their jobs. It’s a tough question, but I would secure a job, and before you move take a few days to secure a place to live.

I’ve always moved after getting a job, but it will be stressful either way.

The major problem is that as a household of three people (my uncle included) trying to live on two people's measly SSI, it's just not cutting it. For example, one of our major problems is that all of our furniture and beds are infested with bedbugs and fleas, and on top of that our beds support is broken and my husband refuses to sleep on it so I sleep on it and my husband sleeps on the couch. The solution would be to get rid of the infested and broken furniture and then call an exterminator then replace furniture and beds.... But since we can't afford it we can't do that...

I'm mostly depressed because I did not imagine I'd be living in poverty at this age and on top of that try to take care of a very Ill person. I just can't handle it.

Oh no no no no no - I'm saying that about supporting your uncle. He needs to apply for his own support.

I suggest you leave the furniture behind when you do move. That's ONE way to get rid of bed bugs! But you will need to fumigate/disinfect any clothing you take with you.

Why don't you apply for housing assistance of various sorts? It takes time but you desperately need to get away from that uncle!

I know the situation with your husband is troubling, and complicated, so I am not commenting on that, at all. But if you are already supporting parasites like bed bugs and fleas, why on earth should you support another (your uncle!).

My uncle gets SSI too.... My husband is the one who currently gets nothing until hopefully he gets his SSI.

I was hoping to hear from this one job in Texas I found because the things going for it are that it's about birds but mostly teaching to adults and it's in the Corpus Christi area and over 10 years ago I had a short job there and it said in the announcement they preferred someone who was familiar with the area... plus it's permanent with benefits... But the logistics of the initial move would be a nightmare!

Would you find that it's too physically demanding, like the one you just had? I'm not sure what the issues were there, but it would be a pity to take the Texas job (assuming you got it) and then lose it for the same issues.

The first job I took said in it's description "ability to walk long distances and lift 50lbs" the other one says "lift 25lbs" so there is a difference at least.... But once I took a job that sounded like on paper identical to a job I did successfully earlier but it turned out totally different....

Oh yeah, I see now. I can't lift 50 pounds, and I can barely walk at all. Good thing I am retired!

Doing a little searching I found THAT.... I almost perfectly match that job AND I already live in the Lansing area where it is located? OMG But it has a problem... It was posted at least a month ago according to indeed... I applied to it but could they have hired already

This problem can be resolved for $39.95usd + s&h and a couple household items.

How good are you with liquid measurements & basic chemistry/cooking?

Long story short: You can buy a concentrated bottle of permethrin (insecticide) on ebay & then dilute it with water yourself, put it in a spray bottle, and spray beds/carpets and even clothes. Diluted enough and it's completely safe for use on your skin, too. It's the active ingredient in many aerosol/spray bedbug/flea/cockroach killers as well as for lice. It's safe enough for people that the US military now has their uniforms coated in it as it acts as a permanent bug spray that doesn't wash off in the laundry. It's sold on ebay for pest control, diluting to spray livestock with to kill/prevent fleas etc, spraying dog/animal kennels, and some people dilute it down and use it to spray camping clothing as well as tents.

Bedbug sprays & large dog flea treatments might range from like 0.5-1.5%, lice shampoos & lotions for use on humans are something like 1.5-5% iirc, but some people will put straight up concentrate on themselves (possibly not good, I'd at least dilute it down to 5-7% range for use on skin (mix it into hair conditioner or unscented lubriderm lotion for use on skin - just a little more potent than the stuff sold at pharmacies if you really want it to be potent) It comes in a high concentration of 36.8%, so, just do a little volume math & dilute it down to the concentration used for bedbug/flea pest control (read it right off the labels of commercially prepared products), do a little measuring & mixing in a spray bottle & go to town on everything.

If volume measurements math and concentration conversions etc aren't your thing, but you can measure & pour just fine, I'll gladly do the math and post the details of exactly how much of this stuff you'd need to mix into what size spray bottle with how much water.
