It is with heavy heart that I say this, but we had to say goodbye to my dog Josie today. She was having serious heart problems and medication wasn’t working. She was having difficulty breathing, eating and walking. So we had to make that difficult decision that every pet owner fears. She was very loyal and loving, and will be sorely missed.

I am very heartbroken. I had a friendship end, and now this—and all just before Christmas.

I'm so sorry. I share your sadness. We had to put down a cat about a year ago and your post brought it all back.

But ... I very much love the pet we got to replace her. Life goes on.

I'm so sorry to hear what you're going through. It must have been incredibly difficult to say goodbye to such a loyal friend. Hugs and condolences for your loss.

i relate, and feel very sorry that u have to go thru this, and in this time of year
dogs i grew up with both went by cancer. they;ve been operated multiple times, but it kept coming back.
grief will subside, with time. take that time. loss needs to go it's course. see u on the other side.

16 is venerable for a dog. I miss my dog, too. Suzi was a black-and-tan shorthair dachshund. Smart and friendly. Fun to play with. Sometimes the only friend I had. It's been 40 years since her passing.

I'm so sorry to hear that. Try to think like this: Your dog must have had a happy life with people who treasure her so much.

What I think is my earliest childhood memory is of our black cocker spaniel. I remember her drinking out of the toilet and my mother saying that it was okay because she was sick. I went with my father when she was taken to the vet to be put to sleep. She got sick all over the back seat of my fathers car. He loved his car, but he wasn’t upset. I could only have been around three, maybe close to four. My grandfather died about six months later and I think the passing away of our dog made me understand the finality of my grandfathers death. I remember being quite upset that I wasn’t allowed to say goodbye to my grandfather. We did not get another dog, but I got another spaniel when my son was young.

Sixteen years is a long time in a dogs years. Every time I lose a dog, I bury him myself. Then after a few months I begin the search for a new dog. It is a little hard sometimes to raise a young puppy. Some can be very destructive the first couple years. They chew everything up. This last one chewed up my satellite TV cables, my satellite internet cables, his dog house, you name it just about everything. Oh yes he chew up the wiring harness on my truck and on my wife's Jeep. Those are expensive to repair. But he is almost out of the chewing stage. He has an unusual trait. Whenever someone new comes over, he searches for a stick or bone, finds one and puts it in his mouth before he approaches the stranger. It is his way of saying "Look, I am not dangerous. See, I have a stick in my mouth. It is O.K. to pet me because I have a stick in my mouth. I will not hurt you. With a stick in my mouth I cannot bite you."

My sincerest condolences to you. I've been through that many times, and it hurts.
