I wrote a story a while ago about a homeless Polish guy being killed. I based the story on an actual Polish guy I knew who used to beg sometimes quite persistently from me. Today I found out in the news this guy died. Christ. I had this sixth sense that it would happen to him. I'm heartbroken. He had a wife, she's still alive. This guy was cocky sometimes but he was young, I'm sad he's died. He protected me sometimes. When I was drunk once and some guys attacked me he threw them off me and defended me. Life is so fragile.

We go through our day to day lives and mostly don't acknowledge how fragile life is and how quickly and irrevocably that can change. There is a gap where once there was a person, one you knew and one you appreciated. I am sure that part of the reason I sought out work in hospice was to get some kind of understanding and experience with death. I found that if I just sat with it (it being the feeling, the reality, the random firings of my mind) it settles into me and makes me more whole. Perhaps this will happen for you too.

I googled someone who was a client of mine in the mental health center (and I bought a painting from) and to my sorrow, he died two years ago. It's been 25 years or more. There was a picture of him on his findagrave.com memorial. I still have the painting. It didn't say how he died, I hope it wasn't from suicide. I hope he has been happy. But knowing what I know of him, I think probably not.
