How am I supposed to work in noise?

OK I moved to this neighbourhood because being in this town is good for my social anxiety. But the neighbourhood itself is ridiculous. I'm living in a cabin in the suburbs. All around me is noise from builders and noise from my neighbour who insists on shouting and doesn't have a job. I don't have paid employment, either, but I have better things to do with my time than sit around in my garden shouting.

Talking of which, I want to get on. I want to write and do visual art. I write all night long but I get too distracted by the internet at night for this to be a suitable time to submit stuff. I used to be a frequently published poet in magazines and things like that. How can I be if I'm subjected to noise?

I can't sleep at night because my cat insists on coming in and out and it's the middle of winter. She can't go out all night, it isn't fair. When I was in my old house, I could put her in the hallway and insist she stay out there but if she did that here she'd freeze. She better get used to it in spring, though. I chose this neighbourhood specifically because it's safe for cats.

There are ear defenders but as well as sound sensitivity, I have touch sensitivity. Ideally I'd like a solution which is easy to implement and doesn't involve anything touching my body.

I'm scared of this neighbour so I don't want to approach her. This might be on stereotypes but I've known her type in the past. Besides, she might be deaf and genuinely need to shout.

Thanks. I'm going to look into this :) And noise cancelling headphones (over ear) for the day time. I just don't want to wear them to bed because they'll be awfully uncomfortable. But noise cancelling headphones just make noise. (or am I wrong) so maybe your solution alone is the best thing.

I already have two lots of curtains because of my light sensitivity but hopefully I'll find something that fits.

I think you'd have to just deal with the internet if that's you're only problem with doing things at night because that's much easier to control than other people's noise.

Probably right.

I have to start controlling the ways I use the internet as I get addicted.

But maybe I just need to work night shift and quit feeling guilty about that.

I've done well though, last few days my cat has been next door (my parents' live next door so I'm not putting my problem onto acquaintances, the acquaintances I don't like are the other next door) and in the kitchen, so out of everyone's way.

With a full night's sleep, I'm getting my work done.
