I live with them and was offered a job, a really high paying job too, compared to what I've had before, and my parents discouraged me not to take it. I just told them I want to wait until this corona virus is over. Three weeks later, they called again, but I missed the call. I can wait to call them back and think about it, but my parents say don't take a job right now, because they cannot have me possibly bringing the virus home. What do you think? Should I respect their needs more, or should I just take the high paying job, and risk it, even though it will cause a lot of drama with them probably? Or should I roll the dice and wait, hoping they still want me after the pandemic is over?

Is it not possible to do this work at home remotely?

Not really, it's a shipping and packaging job, so I need to be at the factory and warehouse doing it.

Your parents are right - you can't jeopardize yourself or your family! Talk to them - I'm sure they will help with bills once your EI runs out. Stay safe!

We are right in the middle of a serious pandemic crisis right now, so surely the employer would understand if you tell them that you're willing to have the job but can't take it right now because you might be at risk of contracting the virus or passing it on to your parents. After all, you're only doing what you think is best under the current government rules.

Well, it's just that we can't keep hiding from the virus forever, and it keeps getting worse and worse, and it's not going away. Eventually we are going to have to go back out and go back to work and we will all get the virus soon enough. Some of his may live, some may die, but we are all going to have to go back into the real world, and get the virus, and just accept it, won't we? Am I being realistic, or am I looking at it the wrong way? Because allowing the economy to completely collapse is worse than getting the virus itself, so I figure we might as settle for the lesser of two evils.

The only way to escape the virus is to leave the planet. And since we cannot do that, we are going to get it some point and probably soon, so why deny it?

Yes you are right. By not going out and mixing for months, we are not building an immunity to OTHER existing viruses because we won't be coming into contact with them, so millions of people are going to die in the future from flu and noroviruses that are lurking out there.

And anyway, maybe this is nature's way of getting us humans back for destroying the planet. I think everything should just carry on as normal, and if you get it you get it. They'll soon find a vaccine for it, may take a year but they will.
Anyway, about a million people have died from coronavirus worldwide. What is a million, compared to over 7 billion people altogether? Even 3 or 4 million is not going to even scratch the surface of the huge population on this planet. Even the black death didn't kill everyone.

As humans we need money to live, and if you don't have money then you can't live. The world recession is going to affect a lot more people than this coronavirus ever will.

If you take the job, your could get kicked out of the house. You could get fired.

If you don't take the job, you might never get a better one again.

Your choice, but you only have two options

So are you saying I should take the job therefore, since not taking one is going to be worse than possibly getting the virus?

I have a little over 200 K of Canadian dollars right now. I was going to use a lot of the money as a business investment goal though, and I am worried I will not have a lot in the end, if I don't have a job, after the virus is over. I was going to invest in it earlier, but then the virus hit.

I probably wouldn’t take the job, then. All in all.

I understand the temptation.

But if you have the skills, you could get a similar job once the COVID thing is over—which might be sooner than in the US.

But I feel like I don't have much skills, and the job was just dropped conveniently into my lap. I feel that I don't have much skills for a lot of jobs afterwards.

You must have decent skills to have saved up $200,000.

I’m not begrudging that you’ve saved the money.

Oh well, I manfactured mining equipment, but lots of people can do that job I figure, cause they will literally hire anyone to do that job, not that that's a bad thing I'm saying. But I hated that job and do not want to go back to it, at all.

I hope you can get a job with a pension.

The Canadian pension sucks.
