Strange noise

Ok. So, I finally got the burglar alarm taken care of.

Now, there's been a strange noise at night above my room from the neighbor above me, I think.

It doesn't happen a lot and only at night.
It kind of sounds like something starting up like a space heater or something similar. Then, it just goes away. But, how could I hear it?

What could it be?

I may write a note to her about it or/and asking about it if it persists.

Well, I don't think anyone is reading this, so I guess I'll use it as a small journal on the topic.

I didn't hear it last night.
My neighbor may have listened to my note.

I did think I heard it once this morning.

I hope not.
If it comes again soon, then I'll know.

I'd guess that you're right - probably a heating pump, dehumidifier, or some other motorised gadget.
With things that have juddery moving parts, vibrations can get into the walls or floorboards, making your side act a bit like a loudspeaker - so you're maybe not hearing the sound directly, but from tiny vibrations of your ceiling.

If it's something which is stood on the floor (and your neighbour is amenable), placing it on top of a thick rubber mat should help to damp the vibrations - I used to do that with a dehumidifier in my old attic, and it cut down the sound loads.

I think it's gone. But, I still have the nervous feelings of it being here, like residue feelings.
It's weird.

Later this morning, I think I heard it 3 times lighter than before.

I thought I heard it once or twice. Only that.
I hope I can just relax soon.
I get freaked out over noises at times.

Are you sure you don't have Tinnitus or HA?
