This girl who I work with was criticising my lifestyle today, and it made me feel depressed. I don't like people criticising the way I live.
I mean I do live a normal life; I live with my boyfriend and I work, so nothing abnormal there. But I don't drink, I'm not interested in going out to bars and getting drunk, but according to this girl I am weird because I don't drink. She was interrogating me, asking me if I drink at all, and why I don't like drinking, and all these other questions. Then she asked me if I have any hobbies. I said I do, but I tried to think of the most 'social' hobby I have, so I said that I like shopping. She scoffed and said that isn't a hobby, which may be true, so I said that getting drunk isn't a hobby either. She didn't know what to say to that.

This girl has had emotional issues and has acted very neurotic in the year that I have known her, but she had the cheek to say to me to sort my anxiety problem out. I have anxiety, yes, but it doesn't stop me from being positive, co-operative and friendly at work - where as she has often sulked, been rude to the boss, had lots of time off work, and overreacted at little things. She's even called me 'normal' before, because she admitted she had emotional issues. The other workers there have said that she has issues and that she even gets on their nerves. But not to her face obviously, and I never criticised her for having issues. I've even comforted her before when she had an emotional meltdown because she had got told off for being on her phone at work. But I never said "well you shouldn't really be on your phone at work". Instead I tried to be sympathetic, just so she could feel that somebody was on her side.

But I think she's on some sort of medication now, because she hasn't had any emotional outbursts at work for weeks, and seems quite emotionally stable. But now she seems to be getting on my case, telling me how to live my life and making fun of me for not doing things she likes.

I love my job, I love the place, and I don't want someone bringing me down. She even laughs at me because I say I enjoy my work. So now it's a crime to enjoy my work now is it, as well as not drinking?

I'm fed up with people criticising me. When I done volunteering a few years ago 2 of the women there began criticising my lifestyle, telling me I should do this and that. I left in the end because I was tired of them ganging up on me. All I do is live my life respecting others and doing hobbies that don't hurt others and just trying to be contented and loving, and yet SOMEONE always has to see a problem with it. I hate being criticised.

Why is her opinion so important to you? Her opinion seems irrelevant to your own happiness if you live according to your own standards of happiness.

Stick to your guns, Joe.

Obviously, this person has "problems."

What is wrong with not drinking? What is wrong with liking your job?

I sense she is actually jealous.

Don't let this bring you down, Joe.

"No one can make you feel inferior without your consent." -- Eleanor Roosevelt (1884-1962)

If you place more importance on the opinions of other people than you place on your own opinion of yourself, then you have given those other people permission to make you feel bad about yourself.

And this world is full of people who simply love to make others feel bad.

The irony is that they make others feel bad so that they can feel good about themselves.

I can't help getting sensitive. I just don't know how to handle criticism.
It's just that social approval is important to me, and when people start getting on my case about what I choose to do with my life, I feel insecure because it feels like everything I do is wrong. It's pathetic how a person can judge you as a whole person based on whether you get drunk every Saturday or not.
I really hate smoking, but do I sit there going on at her for smoking? And even if I did, I bet she wouldn't like it one bit. So I just keep my opinions to myself and mind my own business.

I like drinking but I think not drinking just shows good self control

It's okay Joe, just try not to be so hard on yourself. Her opinion is just that, an opinion. The way you choose to live your life is perfectly fine, so long as it doesn't involve hurting others.

I know two people, personally, who died from cirrhosis of the liver (which you get if you drink too much)

1. My maternal grandfather

2. My brother-in-law

You would be an idiot if you just drank alcohol because someone wanted you to drink alcohol.

It's not just the opinions of hers that upset me, it was also the way she started criticising about my anxiety, like she didn't understand anything about anxiety - when she should because she has suffered mental health too. Plus the way she was interrogating me too. It was as though she was mocking me.

And yeah I saw my grandfather die in horrible pain from bowel cancer, due to being a severe alcoholic.

anybody, who decides to f**k with another person's lifestyle choices, especially healthy ones, should really just f**k right off. feeling angry is totally natural reaction for somebody so grossly crossing the borders. that person obviously is an idiot. and oppinion of idiots should be shoved right up their ass. i feel angry for u too, just by reading this. i'd totally snap at them if i was there. their behaviour is gross and no way of acceptable. their addiction is dusgusting. damn, could i just send u some text hugs about this? facing something like that is really awful. please hold on and dont let that cretin get to u. they are just a deplorable brainless ouchie. u are better than letting them up their own undue self-esteem at ur expence. hugs (if u accept them).
