Transferred to a different job site downtown, which means I have to pay for parking that I can’t afford, which means I have to find a weekend job ASAP and work 6-7 days a week to stay afloat. f*****g sucks. First world problems, I know, but I’m f*****g pissed.

No idea how long the new assignment is for, either. They never tell us. Could be a day, could be months. They can just tell us to go somewhere else any day - even mid day.

Can you park near a train station or something?

That's what I do when I could. I park about a half a mile from a subway station. Then I drive home with it. It's a free park.

You said your site is downtown, meaning you’re near public transportation.

It takes twice as long to get to work (meaning I would have to get up at 3:30am) and only saves $4/day vs the cheapest parking downtown. Plus the fact that you can’t go anywhere (beach!) or run any errands after work, or carry tools etc.

There’s no free parking in this area of downtown. Plus it has the highest hourly street parking rates in North America. Nearby parkades are $18-25/day. I park several blocks away for $10.50/day at a cash only lot and walk. It’s a bit of a hidden gem of an underground parkade accessible via a back alley.

That's $52.50 a week. That sucks.

And that is the Cheapest anywhere downtown. Other places earlybird (park before 6am) is $16-18/day. Street parking is $6/hr.

There’s one cheap place to park after 6pm until late like 2 or 3am for $4 or $6 - it’s safe, too, as it’s underground at the BC Law Courts downtown.

And either free street parking or a lot I can park in for $1.50 at the beach.

Gotta know these things when you live here where everything is very expensive! (Like gas, which at $1.539/L right now for regular 87 octane is $5.82CDN/US gallon & expected to rise to $1.61/$6.09 by next week.)

This whole being very paycheque to paycheque thing right now f*****g sucks. But, meh, I have my health and can work etc blah blah this is only temporary until I work my wage up.

Do you have unwanted stuff you could sell on ebay? Or do you have a year 2009+ car for uber or a 1990+ car for uber eats?

I can only say our work lives are completely different but I feel your pain anyway. Money is no comfort when I told my boss I can only program so much before my hands won't work & I've been at it for 3 weeks now. My commute is hell too. Maybe you could use Car2Go Smarts & just hand them off instead of paying for parking? Just a thought.

We don’t have Uber or Lyft etc here. No ride sharing. Uber eats is here now, though. And Instacart for doing other people’s grovery shopping. Not sure if there’s any money in delivering food since gas is very expensive.

Finding another part time job, or side jobs in my trade, will not be difficult. There are tens of thousands of un-filled jobs here because people can’t afford to live here anymore.

I just didn’t really want to have to work 6-7 days a week right now. I did much of the last two Summers, though, and that weekend job pressure washing on campus near the beach might start up again soon. Hmm. I am working a side job tomorrow morning helping tape a new jewelry store my dad just built, so that’ll help. But what was going to get me a little bit ahead is now going to get blown on parking.

Meh. I’m just whining. They’re only first world problems, and if I force myself to go to bed and sleep at night instead of chatting or hooking up with pretty little gay boys, then I can handle working 6 & 7 days a week. It just kinda cramps my style a little.

Still, car shares might save you a little money. You could avoid the parking charges by leaving someone else your car & going home in a different one.

They have Uber in Kenya. I’m surprised they don’t have it in Vancouver.
