My husband has had reoccurring bouts of abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea for years... They really couldn't figure out what was wrong. He went to the hospital again today and then admitted for same thing. Now they have a theory they are going to test tomorrow. They think it's Chron's. Anyway flare-ups can be triggered by certain foods and one common one is non-soluable fiber... Anyway right before he developed symptoms again I made him some split peas... And he ate like well a rediculous amount, like I had a bowl and my neighbor old lady came by and had a bowl but he ate the rest over the course of the day... Then the diarrhea started...

It can be ulcerative colitis.

He should avoid food with high fiber concentration.

How miserable for him! We have forum members who have either Crohn's or ulcerative colitis. Either one is really difficult. Then your husband also is trying to manage diabetes. Both of you should have visits with nutrition educators together.

I hope you have some good news this week on the employment front.

The test they did was inconclusive, so they might have to send him to a bigger hospital to do more tests .

I talked to a social worker also about my frustrations... I told her about possible job offer. She told me husband insisting on staying home and I take care of him was obviously stressing me and if I had the job offer take it and leave him here (husband already told me to do this anyway) but then separate our finances... Let him live on his SSI, then someone would be qualified more experienced than me can come and take care of him because if I stay here, then the state won't fund anyone else to take care of him... Kinda harsh but might have to be done...

My brother is an ulcerative colitis sufferer for more than 20 years, he got it when he was at age 18, and he has type 1 diabetes too.


How old is your husband?

He's 57, but he's had these symptoms on and off for many years.

If it turns out to be Ulcerative, ask the doctors about VSL3, look it up.

I've had Crohn's disease for half a century. The way it can affect individuals can differ massively... a lot depends on where the disease manifests itself (anywhere in the alimentary canal) and how severe it is. So I can't really say what to expect. Obviously your husband needs a proper diagnosis asap and the correct medication. Then you need to avoid all the foods that can trigger a flare and avoid stress as much as possible... this can also trigger a flare. Keeping a food diary is a really good idea as is keeping a poo diary (when you have Crohn's you don't get squeamish about stuff like that).
