I’ve had my cat since 2008. He’s gotten very skinny and threw up on my brother’s computer last night. I love him and am worried. I know it’s part of having a pet but it still scares me. Any advice?

It could be something as simple as having developed a sensitivity to what you feed him. I recommend a trip to the vet, who can check for anything serious as well as advise about diet.

Cats throw up a lot, that fact in itself is nothing to worry about.

Take him to the vet ASAP, as it could be CKD, (Chronic Kidney Disease) which is actually one of the most common ways that older cats die:

Quote:
One of the top silent killers of cats is chronic kidney disease (CKD) (This is sometimes called chronic renal failure or chronic kidney injury). These terms are all semantically the same, and basically mean that 75% of both the kidneys are ineffective and not working. Clinical signs of CRD include:

Excessive drinking
Excessive urinating
Larger clumps in the litter box
Weight loss
Bad breath (due to toxins building up in the blood and causing ulcers in the mouth, esophagus, and stomach)
Lethargy
Hiding

Thankfully, with appropriate management, cats can live with CKD for years (unlike dogs where CKD usually progresses more rapidly). Chronic management may include a low-protein diet, frequent blood work, increasing water intake (e.g., with a water fountain or by feeding a grueled canned food), medications and even fluids under the skin (which many pet guardians do at home, once properly trained).

Unexplained weight-loss probably indicates something pretty bad, so get to the vet pronto.

It could be something very simple like a virus. It could also be other issues including crystals (a kidney issue), or diabetes, which my kitty developed. The vet will ask you about his littering habits so take note of those behaviours before your appointment. It sounds nasty, but you could also take a sample of "the sick" with you, if possible.

I hope your kitty recovers quickly.

A sample like that is very useful, yes. They could analyze it in the lab.

How old is he?
Does he go outside?
Is he fixed?
When was the last vet visit?
What do you feed him? What are the main ingredients?
Any other oddities? (Not using the litter box, going(potty) in plants, withdrawn, not eating, eating alot, excessive water drinking, not drinking, lethargic, Feels abnormally warm? Etc)
What was the vomit; food, fluid? What was the coloration(clear, food colored, green, did there seem to be blood?)?
Did there look like there was anything in the vomit? (Plant bits, hair, other odd bits, worms - might look like spaghetti or rice if it's segments)

He is feeling better and has been running around and jumping on things. He has a special blanket he is obsessed with that he wasn’t leaving.
