Told my adviser I would be switching labs (we didn't work well together) but that I'd finish up my current paper first. I've talked to some other professors but haven't secured a new lab yet. Feels like I burned the boats behind me as if I can't find a new adviser in the next few months I'll have to leave the university.

The magnitude of that is sinking in and I'm freaking out a bit.

I’m sure you can find an advisor.

What’s making you “burn bridges?”

I forgot what your field of endeavor is.

My adviser and I have always had a difficult relationship in large part because we don't communicate well (partially my fault, partially theirs it's a 2 way street). After our latest "fight" I realized I spend far more time worrying about my adviser than about my research and that is not good for me or my work.

I'm usually a bit cagey about what exactly I do since I value my anonymity on this site, but I work in bio-engineering bacteria for useful purposes.

There once was a guy here who had similar troubles. He was in a STEM-related field. He came to WP for help. I believe he ultimately got his PhD.
