I truly side with the concept that you don't have to be friends with the people you work with. You don't have to be friends with everyone in your life. What I don't side with is hostility in the work place. This is what I feel almost everyday. And maybe I'm just overreacting, but I feel uncomfortable working with this particular coworker. I'm not going to bring up names or even reveal the gender of this person I work with. So, it wasn't like this at first when they joined the pharmacy. This coworker and I got along, we even had some things in common. It was great. However, I have heard of some certain behaviors of this person. Prior to this, they were working at another pharmacy for the same company. I heard from some grad students who had worked with this tech was unfriendly and frigid. So, I had no idea what I was expecting. I was a tad intimidated. I'm not very good at handling people with this sort of personality.

This tech also had tons of experience working in a pharmacy, and we needed that for ours because another experienced tech moved on to another career. I embraced that part about this tech and made the best of it. I mean, we were desperate. A pharmacy comes with a fast paced environment and you can't do that with one tech and one pharmacist.

Months roll by and now I slightly regret it. I was one of them who chose to bring this tech from this other pharmacy to work with us, and now I feel uneasy every time we're working together. I feel that every little thing I do, I'm doing it wrong. Every word I speak, every move I make, every drink of my water- and no, I'm not trying to sound like The Police- I'm doing it wrong. I feel them judging me. This makes me completely despise my heightened empathy. There was one day where I said something about a prescription the tech put in for a patient, and it rejected and when I told them it rejected, they said with a very passive aggressive tone, "Yeah, I know. I have to call insurance, can I just do that? Thanks." That wasn't exactly verbatim, but it was along those lines. Man, was I floored. They never sounded so irritated, like I had said something that was so inconvenient to them.

There have been other occasions where I would say something to them, and they would just respond in a cold tone. I just feel so disliked there. I'm trying very hard to show them that I don't care how they treat me, like I'm made of stone. But I'm not. I'm highly sensitive and the slightest cold tone makes me want to cry. I especially don't wanna cry in front of this person because they have told stories of making past work colleagues cry and making fun of them. I don't want to be one of them. But it's really hard. Soooo, perhaps I should get a new job. I'm done having to deal with this every single day. It's sucking the life out of me. I don't plan on approaching this person and asking them why they treat me the way they treat me. There's no way I could constantly keep my composure, and I would probably break down.

TL;DR: My coworker is unfriendly and I'm considering quitting because of that.

You choose whether or not to quit your job

Strangers on the internet do not tell you to quit your job

However, your next job could be worse

For what it's worth I've been plenty of jobs where co-workers or even bosses have been unfriendly to outright hostile. This is quite normal in the workforce (unfortunately).

Larger organisations do try to develop team building (spending money on lunches/outside group activities) to increase the rapport between staff (good professional relationships are healthy and productive). Smaller businesses can't afford to do this. But at the end of the day you can't be everybody's friend. If your co-worker is just not friendly then just accept it (it's part of life). If they are deliberately sabotaging your work performance then that's another matter and you may need to talk to them or your boss to resolve these issues.

You need to balance out your own personal career development + paying bills in relation to taking the step to resign and look for other work. Usually 2yrs in a job is plenty (for your resume) and when you hit this point simply start putting out feelers and applying for other jobs. Whatever you do don't leave your current job until you get accepted into another one otherwise you will risk going without cashflow for an undetermined period of time.

Just got to adapt to the situation...if you go into a job with the premise that people are essentially selfish b**stards then you will be better prepared

How are the other co-workers?

Don’t quit this position before you obtain another position.

Other coworkers are fine, it's really this one I work with 8 hours a day, five days a week. I would never quit this job before getting another one.

You're right. You don't have to be friends with everyone. But don't just accept it when someone is unfriendly to you. If they bother you, you could talk to your boss about the situation. And if they don't listen, then you decide what you feel is right for you.

I'm not an expert, but that's what I would recommend.

Some people are real jerks. Sorry you have to spend so much time with one.

I notice you are female and 23. I recommend learning how not to cry. It's not easy and you can't do it over night or for this job, but it is a skill worth learning.

You can look for another job, but these jerks are everywhere; fewer some places, lots in others.
