Saw a non-religious couple at the library today

I generally encounter people who are openly or quietly Christian (Wearing a shirt with religious messages or says something like “Jesus Freak” or a church uniform) in my daily existence. Most of the people that come into the library will check out books by Christian authors, whether they are fictional books or non-fictional books. I rarely have patrons who are non-Christian and they have to keep a low profile, especially if they are Muslim. Hindus here tend to get mistaken for being Muslims mostly because the poor education in this country makes people unable to separate India from the Middle East.

But today I checked out items to a couple that were non-religious. The girlfriend/wife wore a shirt that defined the Bible as a “racist, sexist, homophobic, pro-slavery, and pro-incest” book (Not the exact statement), something I’ve never seen a woman in my area wear. I imagine she gets a lot of flack from the Baptist women as well as redneck and ghetto hip-hip women since those demographics are generally Christian and consider atheism “devil worship” and sometimes hyperventilate at the idea. It does look like her individuality paid off. Unfortunately, I am constantly pressured to be religious instead of being authentic.

Where do you live? I lived most of my life in places with a rather lax attitude towards Christianity except for 19 months in the following locale where a heavy metal band coming to perform sparked protests:

What was the exact statement on the shirt?

I'm an agnostic/atheist.

But I feel like what was said on that t-shirt was really too much. I'm not anti-religion like that.

Killeen-Temple-Fort Hood area; I live in Temple. It’s more ‘country’ than the other two despite being a city. The Christians here drink beer and have tattoos but it’s only ok if they do it while people from other religions or are non-religious are frowned upon for doing the same things.

My family would give me so much flack if I wore that shirt even though my stepfather and older brother are homophobic. Both would deny the other things and say “Nuh uh! That’s what Muslims believe in!” as well as say the US is a “Christian nation”.

Compared to Midland (and Odessa), Killeen is full of heathens.

I kind of think Jesus freak sounds cool but I couldn't get away with wearing a shirt that said that becuase it sounds cool but what it means is basically you're religiouse.

I concur. Even though I myself am Catholic, I avoid wearing such clothes because IMO, it allows for stereotyping of Christians (regardless of denomination) to be justified.
