Why not working with heritage stuff? Early diesels & steam engines are a hassle to maintain & run, but there are other jobs on the railroad itself.
As part of my guard duties I used to work lever frames, which were basically open air signalboxes minus the extra equipment.
Most of the local signalboxes atill have levers in them in my area. Yes. I have thrown some heavy levers on a preserved line, one of which the volunteer signalman did not expect anyone to throw, as the signal was well over a quarter of a mile away.
I would not be allowed to do any railway work now though as I never knew what I was experiencing were partial shutdowns.
