I work for a startup that had been around for 5 years - and I've been a main developer of the app's source code ever since (the only one left of the original developers), and I was getting paid in USD dollars monthly until the financial crackdown. Now I get paid in US dollars, same amount on paper, but as a cheque; so once I have to retrieve it from bank it gets converted to local currency losing at least 50% of its value (not to mention the strict capital control, I can't even pull my whole salary in one month).
My job is very demanding and stressful, there's always deadlines.

This board requires you to be registered and logged-in to view hidden content.

So that's like that, last week I got contacted by another company for a development work, the guy did offer me a job in USD cash but not much higher than what I get paid now even after currency conversion; so I told him I can do it as part time freelance if possible.

I met him and his CTO and got the details and I gave a long technical feedback on it (I liked them and that CTO is at least very technical) - after evaluating the project deeply at home I emailed him that it's something that needs at least 5 months full-time, which is something I cannot commit with for the time being; so I advised him that he should hire a dedicated full-timer instead.

The guy called me and he told me there might have been a misunderstanding, and explained that he isn't expecting for the project to be built in mere months, but he needs someone to assist the CTO to plan, document and create detailed backlog tasks in order who ever the developer who will take it will know what to build it, he said "I was impressed by your knowledge and honestly, and I definitely need someone like you, for now I don't want you to do coding". So it's pre-development logistics work for now, not development (which is something I did before too).

Then he asked me : "can you work only 10 hours weekly for me and get paid in X amount cash, for 3 months; then we see"?

So here, I realized that this guy is a future opportunity that may not repeat, he was willing to offer me a full time job at first, and even after I initially declined he still wants me. So I realized this is the last chance not to burn any bridges with him, if my current employer goes corrupt (as they're claiming) then at least I would working part time for someone who was willing to hire me full time, and maybe he will still be willing for that if I do well.

So I accepted the offer, not for the extra cash money only, but for the work security; I was like 10 hours weekly is nothing, I can easily do 5 hours in weekends, and like one hour per day during week.

But still....I feel this will be stressful still. *sigh* You will see me much less on WP soon. lol

It is a good offer. I think you have done well to accept. There are no certanties in life so one can only do what seems wizest and most appropiate at the time, and if there is something going on in your first company I would be wanting to leave there and then incase you end up in further trouble, but that is my oppinion.

What type of software development do you do/what are your qualifications?

I ask because my high school best friend owns a tech company. He has in house programmers/developers at his head office here & distributors around the world. He also has contract programmers for some specialized industry stuff that are scattered across Europe. More importantly, I know that he’s had some of his custom graphical programming tools developed by some random Ukrainian team he met online via some sort of freelance project website.

Never know, your skill set might match some project he has waiting to be worked on. Could turn into some future work for you. And if so you’d have the added security of Knowing you’ll be paid - he pays all bills Right Now In Full, no waiting 30/60/90 days after you’ve done the work BS.

Alternative idea is that you could post a profile of your skills on one of those freelance sites and potentially be contacted by others like him. Or maybe they work in such a way that people like him post projects and people like you bid on them - something like that. I could ask him what sites he uses to source foreign coding teams if you like and then you’ll have an idea of where on the internet business owners like him in Canada and probably the USA etc are connecting with their foreign programming teams to get things done faster & cheaper.

Feel free to post here or pm if you like.

Edit: I GET that you’re smokin’ busy right now. I mean for future/backup plan/side work when you have time etc - always good to have a few more ideas and options just in case things don’t work out with the startup you’re with now.

Being unmarried should mean you are in a better financial situation, like me. 8)

Sounds like a good idea to me. I worked for a start up for about 6 months and I could tell something was wrong, but I couldn't put my finger on it. Just a bad atmosphere. I managed to get a new job just before it was announced that they were going into liquidation.

Start ups are a gamble. Look out for yourself.
