So many people keep getting colds lately (not covid). I was at a large social gathering yesterday and I know it's going to result in me getting a cold within the next 2 days. I know I'm going to get people in this thread judging me for worrying about catching a cold when there are worse illnesses and diseases out there. I KNOW that, I watched my own mother suffer and die of cancer, I KNOW there are worse things than the common cold, I'm not stupid. So I don't want people being snarky and saying ''I wish I had your worries!'' because right now that will be insensitive. This thread is about colds and colds only.

The reason I hate getting colds is because I suffer with my sinuses as it is, and having that horrible, distracting, uncomfortable, itchy feeling of your sinuses being bloated with mucus is such an unpleasant experience. When you have a cold the mucus doesn't just go away with an antihistamine tablet or breathing in steam or eating more vegetables (I'm not one to believe that diets help fight off colds because I eat the right stuff all the time yet I was always prone to colds before this pandemic happened). I do wish the covid vaccines stopped the common cold because colds are just the bane of my life, like periods.

One person at the social gathering had a cold for about 5 days, and I got near her a few times and when she was showing me some photos she kind of breathed in my mouth, so I have 100% chance of catching her cold now. I say 100% chance, because everyone I know who has gone to large social gatherings or been on a vacation (not abroad) this year have had a bad cold the following week. So it's as though mixing with a lot of people at once automatically gives you a cold. I haven't had a cold since March 2020 so I know it's going to be my turn soon. As long as I take my antihistamine pills every day, my sinuses are so clear and comfortable, and in a day or so they are going to be swollen and infected.

I wouldn't mind catching colds if my sinuses stayed clear. When I had my second covid jab I felt flu-ish, but I coped with it fine because I didn't have a stuffed up nose. So I just relaxed and slept it off. With a stuffed nose and a cough, you can't rest properly. Propping my pillows up just gives me an ache in my neck, and I automatically sleep with my mouth closed so each time I go to fall asleep with a stuffed nose I wake up gasping for air. So I don't bother sleeping with a cold, which then causes sleep deprivation and depression and anger. So getting a cold actually causes anxiety for me and I wish I could go the rest of my life without ever getting a cold again.

Oh and by the way the people I mentioned who got a cold were tested for covid and was negative.

No. Personally, I love getting a COLD. It feels so good to be sick and congested and miserable. Who are these crazy people that hate getting colds?

Nobody likes getting colds but what I'm asking is does anyone really, really hate getting colds to the point where it causes anxiety and distress? That's what I'm asking. Maybe it's a sensory issue thing.

Oh, I do.

It makes the annoyances with my chronic rhinitis into something else entirely, as do a lot of related illnesses -- strep, flu, tonsilitis...

My ears messed up more than it already does.
More involuntarily sneezing that would last for several hours. Adding cough to the list of symptoms when it usually isn't.

And more swollen nasal passages. More sinus headaches.
Meaning I can't move too much without this pressure in my head. And the ever discomfort breathing.

The rest I don't mind. I can tolerate it.

But the respiratory issues... No. I have to deal with symptoms very similar to cold for most of my life.
Cold and other illnesses similar to it renders the barely working antihistamines useless to me.

And not anxiety, oh no... Just utter frustration, pain and more inconvenience and it refuses to go away for good.
It makes the primary source of irritation for a good portion of my waking life just worse.
Half the time I do bang my head on the wall because of it.

My lungs are pretty strong so having a cough doesn't hinder me as much as having a stuffed nose, it's not pleasant of course but having a stuffed nose infuriates me more than anything else (vomiting is the worst thing I hate but that comes under phobia).

Do not read while eating

I suffer with (unseasonable) hay fever, and if I don't take my antihistamine pill for one day I'll get an attack of severe runny nose and constant sneezing. It can be pretty embarrassing. I get a feeling of dryness in one nostril and then ironically my nose becomes a tap that won't turn off. Blowing my nose doesn't reduce the mucus at all. In fact I make more mucus in 15 minutes during these attacks than I do when I get a cold! I've told the doctor but there's not much they can do except give me antihistamines, and they seem to do the trick.

But having a cold inflames my sinuses to the point where my face becomes swollen and my nose, ears and cheeks hurt. When I was a child I had a lot of severe ear infections, and I was taken to hospital when I was about 6 when I had a cold, because my ears became so inflamed that I was really dizzy and couldn't stand up, and I was screaming in agony with bad earache. Luckily this hasn't happened since, probably due to immunity build-up, but I still suffer with my sinuses.

I don't like getting colds, either. But it's better than it used to be.
