I like going away for a change of scenery. I hadn't lived here long before lockdown so I've had the opportunity to find loads of new places within an hour of my home, but I'm itching to go somewhere new and explore now.

How about exploring around mainland Britains only turlough? Something different. I found it about a decade ago while exploring, and it is not just the turlough that is the attraction, as there are a few things around that area to excite!

I dunno.. I maybe get that. We have a LOT of beaches here.. there's one under 20 min drive away, yet I drive 100km round trip to go to The Beach I hang out at - and sometimes I've made the trip twice/day! Living near such an amazing place I'm super drawn to is like being on a little mini vacation every time I head down the stairs to the sand after work.. if I didn't have this place, I dunno, maybe I Would be the kind of person to hop on an airplane once in a blue moon just to be at a beach. Maybe - can't say for sure since I don't live that life.

Wreck Beach is just below the cliffs that these trees sit atop:

Google image search Wreck Beach to find many photos. It makes some Top 10 lists of beaches In The World. Sooo, I have no Need to travel for a beach.. but I understand why some people may feel that need.

Beautiful photo. I like the beach, but it's cold here, so it's rare I'll sit. It's only a short drive from my house. Sometimes if the weather is nice enough I'll take a book and sit.

When I was on holiday in Alicante it was so hot it was a welcome relief to go into the sea and cool down. But mostly we visited landmarks and parks. We set off up a hill at 9am and it was too hot even then. Views were amazing though.

I guess I take the beach for granted now.

It's just that airports make me anxious anyway, and I want it to go smoothly without too much trouble. Waiting around, screaming kids and extremely strict rules are what make me anxious.

My Polish friend went to Poland a few weeks ago and she seemed to have got there and back with no problems. Me and my partner are going to go and book it up in the travel agents because I have no idea how to do it online. I need someone there to ask questions and discuss. There's too much information online and I find understanding deals and stuff like that difficult unless a human is discussing it with me. Yes, I do have some slight learning difficulties and the online world can feel overwhelming, but that's a different topic.

I feel like I have a fog come down into my brain, making thinking and organising things difficult. I just want to be in bed. I love my work, I enjoy what I do, and it is a stress-free environment and everything, but I still want the time to come where I can go home and go straight to bed.

I don't think it's 'autism burnout', because I have an urge to chat to people but sometimes feel too shy with certain people, or I feel like I'll be bugging them, as everyone at work is busy doing their own jobs. This is why I feel I need a vacation, a change of routine because my routine is so dull and mundane.

I want to book our vacation to Poland this Saturday, but my boyfriend has just started a new job and keeps worrying that he might not be allowed to ask for holiday days right away, but I don't think it will make any difference being so we wouldn't be going away until September anyway, so that gives him 3 months to settle into his job.

Also, do you book your vacation first or your week off work first? Because if you book your vacation including all the flights and everything, then you book your holiday days from work, your boss might not let you have that particular week. Or, if you book your holiday days from work first, then book your vacation, you might not get the right available hotel or flights for that particular week. So this is giving me stress already.

Ever thought about driving to Poland?

It's 17 hours from England to Warsaw, according to Google Maps.

I, myself, would be interested in driving around different countries and cities, getting out of the car when I see something interesting. I guess the main problem is the petrol costs.

No, we're not going to drive all the way to Poland. My boyfriend gets drowsy when driving for too long even with breaks, and his doctor says he shouldn't drink energy drinks because of his blood pressure.

I'd like the experience of flying in a plane (I've done it before but that was about 6 years ago).

I don't really want suggestions or advice, I just hope these airport delays and staff shortages gets sorted soon and that it doesn't affect us.

Us Brits don't really like driving long distances for pleasure. I've got American friends who drive for hours across the country to go visit places and it's nothing to them. I'm like, that's too far.

It's really quick to get to the main continent from British airports. Just 2 or 3 hours and you're somewhere new and interesting.

Saying that, there are a lot of countries I haven't visited yet.

I'm sure it'll all be fine Joe and you'll have a great time.

I have way more and better memories of long road trips than the few flights I've taken. My best friend and I drove 2150 kms to Las Vegas for a long weekend keg party once. 21.5 hours to get there, 19.5 hours to get back. It was pretty awesome. 8) But, it was more expensive than flying.. and today it would be W A Y more expensive to drive than fly. It's more expensive to drive 5 hours away than fly today.

I commute 100km/day like it's nothing at all. A few weeks ago I went on a 700km motorcycle ride just for fun - and my brother in law had done the same ride a couple weeks earlier solo. Driving for a day or two or whatever is not really a big deal -> except for gas prices these days. But from what I've heard, it's Australians that make the longest treks for vacations.. driving across the country for daaaaaays just to go skiing or visit a beach etc. But I suppose us North Americans are also pretty good at it. If a family member in Edmonton said I needed to be there asap and a flight wasn't in the cards, I could be there in ~13-14 hours. Just hop in my car and gooooooooo!

We've historically not had cheap air travel in Canada, though, so it's often been lower cost to drive long distances than to fly. With todays gas prices combined with cheaper air travel the business case for road trips is diminishing - especially for only 1 or 2 people. But for a whole family it might still make sense to fuel up and drive vs. fly, especially if you've allowed for the time.

I'm a little worried about the staff shortage at airports too; I, my older sister and my mom have flights to Germany booked for the end of July (we're gonna go see my little sister who lives there.) Here in Finland it's a well known rule though that one should always arrive to the airport at least two hours before their flight is supposed to take off, so I think that as long as we follow that, we won't miss the flight even if there are a lot of people at the security checks and such. Of course, the flight getting cancelled is something we can't control, but if it happens, it happens.

...But if it happens, I guarantee that you guys will be among the first ones having to deal with my whining as I write here while sitting at the airport waiting for the next flight.

I'm sure there are flight cancellations here, too, but the major headlines have been about 38 sailings cancelled to/from Vancouver island this week due to staffing shortages for BC Ferries. I guess for some reason there are not enough trained Mariners to staff ferries safely. Not sure where they all ran away too ?? who knows, maybe during covidtimes some decided to retire/skip town -> it's un-live-ably expensive here now.. and real estate/rent prices have been going straight up.
