What kind of bad financial situations have you been through?

I lived in poverty until I was 9 years old. It got a bit better after that.

More recently I very narrowly avoided becoming homeless. It wrecked my financial situation. The stress of it all was so acute that I'm pretty sure it's lopped at least a decade off my life expectancy. That's how it feels anyway. I'm still recovering from it (mentally and physically) almost 2 years later, if what I'm doing can be called recovering. I sometimes wonder if actually becoming homeless would have been less damaging. My financial situation has stabilised since but I'm very scared of losing that stability again.

About 12 years ago I was $110k in debt, bankrupt, couldn't function to work, lived in my friend's construction site for a year and a half, had food to eat and a total cash income of around $150/month.

Everything is different now.

Voluntary bankruptcy. It was actually a really scary time for me but I got through it.

Grew up broke, found work and learned to trade after Great Depression 2.0, then came close to homelessness a few times in mid-adulthood after lay-offs. I've had to rebuild my finances more times than I've had hot meals.

Got $6000 in debt with my credit card. I got scared about that because my only income was my disability pension. I went to the bank and sorted out a payment plan. It left me broke all the time and I couldn't buy nice things for myself. But three years later I didn't owe the bank anything anymore. I still have my credit card but it's in credit.
