I am not sure though if the job I am doing right now in a retail book shop which I have been in for a number of years counts as a career or is just a job. I sometimes like the job but I do at times get these feelings as though I ''should'' doing something else because I seem to think it would have elevated me higher in the ranks, got a lot more money and paved the way for achieving things later on like a potential partner, more friends, your own house etc.

I never had an interest in wanting to follow my dad's career field as a carpenter even though I had some work experience from him at some of the sites he worked at. I also did do business studies at school but found it hard to understand and at the time had little or no idea of what I would do as a businessman. I also liked playing sports at school like basketball, sometimes football, swimming, trampolining etc but even though I enjoyed it, I somehow didn't feel passionate enough in wanting to make a career from it. The same can also be said for music, I mean I like listening to music but I remember learning to play bass and for a while had a dream of starting a band but in the end learning the bass was very hard to learn and I seem to think though at the time I was impatient to achieve success fast and become a great band but no one else seemed interested in playing with me and in the end it came to nothing and lost interest in learning.

I sometimes look at some of these famous sports-people and business-people who are probably my age or younger and seem to feel ''bad'' because I didn't follow their career paths as though what they are doing is more likely to attain a lot of great goals and achievements by the age of 25 or 30 than if you were someone like me who perhaps wants to become a writer and author.

My career has been put on a likely eternal pause. I may never recover enough to go back to it.

I was a very promising young person but never fulfilled much of these "promises".

I'm not sure if that counts.

Perhaps if you stopped thinking you seem to feel like you should do something and actually do something, you'd have a career.

I did okay in academia, obtaining a bachelor's degree and then a postgrad' certificate.

My working history has been minimum wage jobs throughout pretty much. I have never had a career, only 'jobs'.

You are not alone in feeling like you could of done more, or could do more.

Sometimes life doesn't afford people the opportunities they wish to have.

I think many autistic people are academically very competent and can do the actual jobs well. But we can't cope socially or emotionally with all the office politics and schmoozing that are necessary to progress in careers, so we often end up staying at a low level on the career ladder.

Because we know that NTs place a lot of importance on socialising, getting on well with people and not as much importance on actually being able to do the job competently. So autistic people don't always fit into workplaces, it's often luck if we do.

If only all careers just depended on being able to do the job competently and didn't depend on being able to socialise and deal with office politics competently...

Right?

It's sad that there are a lot of jobs that require an excessive amount of 'soft skills', rather than simply the technical skills to be able to complete tasks that are required of a job.

Very true.

The only jobs I've got on well in were in the caring sector looking after children with learning and physical disabilities. My colleagues could see I was a caring person and although there were some office politics, they weren't as bad as other jobs I've done e.g. marketing, banking. Probably because most care workers are nice, caring people and that is what counts in caring jobs.

I am glad you found a job that you got on better with, in terms of office politics, KitLily. :)

I don't have a career or a job. I have ME/CFS (chronic fatigue) so it's not possible for me, though I did have part time retail jobs when I was younger and not as sick, and was a teacher briefly.

It sounds like you are putting a lot of pressure on yourself to conform to some external ideal of what society or some other source is telling you to be. You don't have to do or be any of those things. Life is not a competition. Do what works for you.

Certainly not...I've never had a career, not even sure how to get one at this point, still looking for a better pay job but not sure that would be a career either or just a job to have while I look for something else.

Thanks, it was the best type of work for me.

However when I had my daughter, a caring job was too much on top of that, so I became a stay at home mum and my life screeched to a sudden halt. Now I do a bit of freelance editing, it keeps my brain active.

I have something that I do for money. Not sure if you'd call it a career though.
