I'm unsure if it will, but I keep hearing things about an asteroid destroying the Earth in 20 years... and I really don't want that to happen as my life's just beginning.

Is...anything confirmed or likely? I don't love being depressed yet I can't help it right now.

Hey,

Apparently there is an asteroid passing by Earth in 2016, and it's believed it'll come back in 2032 for a hit. I don't worry about it too much, I believe by then we'll have the technology to blast it out of the sky.

you have 25 years to wait! Cold become the next Bill Gates in that time i'm sure! i wouldn't worry about it at all, at least until a year before, say 2031! maybe remind NASA around that time in case they forget!

The chances of a near miss are much greater than the chances of an impact.
Our estimates become more accurate each year.

The world isn't going anywhere. Whether the human race is might be a seperate argument, but the world is going to be fine. And if humanity goes, are you really going to mourn? By 2032, we're all going to be 25 years older. f**k, I'm going to be 40. I don't think that any of us can actually envision on any serious level being 25 years older. I have no idea what the f**k my life is going to be like at age 40. I'd personally like to grab a shedload of rocks and start a riot before the world comes to an end, then maybe top it off with an orgy. There, my planning is done. I'll get back to my life now, and you can do the same.

Postscript-By 'life', I mean I'm going to peruse the boards and then read some educational philsophy before going to bed and doing the same thing tomorrow.

The way things are at the moment, we'll all be killed in wars between different groups of people who each think that they are right and deserve supremacy.

Even as we speak the military and designing, building and testing increasingly complex technology to use for the purpose of killing people.

So I think that a meteor should be the furthest thing from your worries.

It's very possible that you'll die today, or tomorrow, or the day after that, or the day after that... it's just not very probable

hmmm... i know the mayan calender ends in 2012 in december of that year, as it just so happens i also read years ago an astriod will be close to earth around that time. Currently NASA apprpriates enough funding for an astroid searching program, they find plenty that seem to cross earths orbit, at least will in the future, but they only receive enough funding to accuratly search 2% of the sky.

I dont worry about an impact myself, currently their will be little warning of one, as their is sooo many rocks out their and soooo little funding.

I personally don't think it's worth worrying about, Meteor. People have been predicting the end of the world for centuries, yet it's still here. And we're a tiny little planet in a vast, vast space. The chances of an asteroid hit must be miniscule. Nah, I'll stick to worrying about climate change instead

Start hoarding water, because the wars over clean water will kill us before an asteroid does.

I'm going to agree with everyone.
Just think about this. If there was anything super-serious or if there was an 100% chance of getting hit, we'd be making plans to survuve by now.

Have fun!

21 december 2012 is the end of time (according to the maya) not the end of the world. But i think bad times are to come, mankind has gone insane, the greatest enemy for mankind is mankind itself.

Human society is no less (or more) sane or worthwhile really than it has ever been. Aztec sacrifices, the Crusades (ancient and modern), the Inquisitions, the Holocaust, the World Wars - just to start with the big stuff. If a judge has been watching, humanity is damned anyway.
