in denial?
I don't really know where to start with this so I'm gonna try near the start...
I didnt know what aspergers was until a few years ago when I was seeking the answers as to why I could possibly have no empathy when my mother was ill. So when I found out about aspergers lots of things seemed to click e.g. mainly the obsessive interests, poor eye contact, appalling social skills, sensitivity to certain stimuli, few friends, lack of empathy and a history of OCD behaviour.
I never got an official diagnosis from the doctor due to the implications it may have in future. But an educational psychologist acknowledged my symptoms and this allowed for me to recieve dissability services whilst at uni.
Now I try to think that I don't have anything wrong with me apart from being shy and liking my interets too much - I just am not interesting enough to have friends etc. Deep down I think there's more to it but superficially I prefer not to.
Am I just in denial and these other things just be there by chance and I can work on making them better?
I know how you feel. I was diagnosed only 2 years ago. Before that, I didn't know what was wrong with me. I didn't have hardly any friends and if I did, I had a hard time connecting to them on an emotional level. I consider myself emotional by the way, but can't express it by crying or laughing at appropriate times. Yes, sometimes I still deal with denial because I want to solve it. I don't want to feel like I have something wrong with me mentally. Day by day since I got on this forum, I'm starting to accept this condition. I've gotten better with eye contact and some communication. It used to be real bad. I also don't look at it as a mental disorder after joining this WP. There are all kinds of people with this diagnosis that don't fit into one shoe. I look at it as just one of those little quirks. Asperger's, Autism, Neurotypical-I don't think we all fit into the norms of what society dictates. Some of us are good at pretending, I would find that miserable though since I used to be one of those. You have my sympathies. Just don't let this stuff get you down. ![]()
MissConstrue,
You should have a go at the Aspie Quiz - or did you try already?
That will give you more food for thought as far as determining whether or not you are an aspie.
Lots of questions here;
1. Are you in denial - um... yes.
2. Are the other things there by chance - could be - the aspie symptoms change from one individual to another.
3. Can you work on making them better - YES - Regardless of whether or not you're an aspie, you can improve anything.
How? Post a thread - "How can I widen my obsessive interests" and see what feedback you get. Then try to follow it. Do the same for your other symptoms.
BTW: I just did a blog on labeling that you might find interesting.
The Aspergers Brand: Getting the Aspie Label - (life-with-aspergers.blogspot.com)
Sorry, not been around in a week or so...
gbollard - I take it your post was meant for me as missconstrue said they already had a diagnosis...
I have taken the aspie quiz yes - I can't remember what my score was exactly although it was definately well into the aspie bracket (but not as high as some peoples I noticed)... just how good is that quiz in determining if indeed one is an aspie?
Thankyou for the link to the blog, I will check it out now.
MissConstrue - it's nice to know that you sometimes feel the same too and that it isnt just me... ![]()
I'm very surprised by how accurate the quiz is.
The "quiz-maker" sometimes posts here as rdos and you'll find that if you talk to him, every question has a long story behind it's appearance in the quiz. They all have very good reasons for being there.
