So I tried to explain to my room mate last night about my AS, I tired to explain all I could,
but she said unto me that "She's worked with Autistic People" and that "Randy, you aren't Autistic"
Well, since she isin't a phychologist, nor does she know that I've been Diagnosed 3 times by 3 different individuals,

I kinda wish people weren't so stereotype motivated,
(I get "You don't like anything like the guy in Rainman, You aren't Autistic." all the freakin' time.)

Anyone else share my woes concerning this? I mean I HATE how stereotype based our society is these days.... It's sad!

Yeah, I've heard that before too... Even by my gf
My family has said the same to me as well. My sister works with special needs children, many of which are autistic. I thought she would understand more than anyone, because having worked with them she'd see that I have many of those traits, just not as extreme. Sadly she didnt see it the way I hoped she would.

Two or three people my mother told that I had AS said they would never have guessed.

Randy, I can't wait for you to come here! I promise WE won't stereotype. Or at least I won't, and I'm 99% sure the others won't either. I like it with more people; I like to be able to get lost in a crowd sometimes and/or get the stimulation of a crowd. :D

As I've stated before, rather than realizing when I say I have AS, that I really DO have AS, everyone assumes I'm some kind of paranoid schizophrenic. Furthermore, they automatically assume paranoid schizophrenics are all Hannibal Lecters or Ted Bundys.

So, from this point on, I have chosen to tell any NT who claims to know anything about how "bad" autism and AS are the following:

"NT's taste like chicken..."

I've had that same comparison to Rain Man. I was at my friend's wedding shower and there were lot's of chatty ppl there. Well normally I don't tell anyone unless I trust them about having AS. Well, we sat at a table, and lady asked why I was so quiet. Funny thing was, I tried to be chatty as possible. So I told her that I had a condition called Aspergers. A lot of ppl asked me what that was. Not an easy thing to explain, so I told them that it was in the autistic spectrum. Well the lady there said, "Well, you don't act anything like that guy in the movie Rain Man." I immediatly felt like I had been slapped in the face, but I guess she didn't know any better. I tried as best as I could to explain to her that it wasn't like that. Everyone just got quiet. I don't think I'll ever do that again. I was asked many times what it was like. Again, I didn't and still don't know how to answere that question. I really now hate how the media has potrayed autism. When ppl see that, they automatically assume that's what autism looks like.

Again, you are holding NTs to an intellectual level along the lines of a higher mammal. NTs are nothing more than cattle. They must be treated like the cud-chewing, mindless herds of of morons they really are. Of course they're not going to understand a simple movie's artistically stylized characters are nothing like reality. They are also not going to understand how anyone with a "mental disorder" can possibly be smarter than they are.

What you really should do is just tell them the following:

"I can tell you, but then I'd have to kill you."

i hate stereotypes.... i have never had that thrown in my face.i remember going for a blood test once ( i had to have it to make sure that my epilepsy medication was not rotting my liver, it wasn't) anyway the person taking the blood told me about her autistic son, who lives with a friend in the rural areas, and i said i was on the spectrum as well.

the reaction i got was Oh really? as in a "nice to see a fellow spectrum person doing well for themselves" sought of way. which was cool, but i don't bring up my AS to many people and not to many notice anything anyway.

When Dustin Hoffman dies, autistics around the world should start a holiday where every year on Dustin Hoffman's deathday we come out and piss on his grave.

That just made me think... my usual response when someone asks me why I'm quiet or what's the matter is "I'm just a little tired", which is kinda true because when people get overly chatty about something I don't give a crap about, my mind just kinda shuts down. I'm surprised people haven't made the connection yet that their boring BS makes me tired.

How does "Rain Man" act?

I've only seen bits and pieces; my mother said he uses echolalia a lot, and likes order/structure? I know he shows savant skills in the movie.

Isn't that how someone with autism behaves (who is also a savant)?

So, you're saying the best way to combat stereotyping is to stereotype others?

I'm not putting Rain Man down, but ppl use Rain Man as means of comparing this condition to typical autism. Look at my last post. That's the line he uses most in the movie. Great movie BTW, it just irks me when ppl compare me to that and say you don't sound like him. Well that's b/c most ppl in the spectrum don't. There's all different degrees in autism and AS. I also use to think that was what autism looked like before I ever got diagnosed. Went into denial for a long time.

Not necessarily. If feel so inclined, you can read up on Daniel Tammet. He's considered an autistic savant (with asperger's) who is very articulate, has no trouble communicating at all, and lives a very productive life. And he has very impressive savant abilities, so there's no doubt about the savant part. I also just read that Kim Peek, the person that Rain Man was based on, had his diagnosis changed since and is no longer considered to be (or have been) autistic.
