Meds arent working anymore
Never Taken any, apart from Anti-depressants when i was younger which didnt work...
and various anti-biotics and painkillers at various times...
i have heard that a number of Autistics got diagnosed early and got help with Medications.. but i never had the oppertunity, by the time i was diagnosed i had to have aready learned to cope without them to survive
might have been helpful in mt formative years... might have turned out less crazy ![]()

Good for you!! ! It was recently noted by the media that a placebo is just as effective as all those psychiatric medications...and
without those disturbing side effects. I feel alot better since realizing those psychiatric drugs that psychiatrists pushed on me as
a kid did more harm than good...and I am now medication-free.

Not all medications are bad.
Please be careful about urging or congratulating people with quitting their meds.
I have ADD, AS, Bipolar Disorder, Social Phobia....and I take meds. I wouldn't be able to function without them. I would withdraw into a world of pain and chaos and neuroses.
With my meds I am a highly functioning adult who actually takes pleasure from normal everyday activities. This didn't happen overnight. It took time to find the right meds...some meds stopped working over time and new ones had to be founds...etc...
While they aren't for everyone...some people need them, be it for a short period of time, or over the long-term. Just be careful when discouraging people from taking their meds. And anyone taking meds...talk to your doctor. Some take longer to get used to. Some dosages need to be titred...or combinations used.
In my case...it's my lifeline to a normal life. My kids and my partner can attest to that.

I agree that some medications do more harm then good...psyciatric and otherwise. One problem with medication and autistics is that they are often used to treat "symptoms" that are not a "disease" but part of the individuals brain wiring. Since no medication can rewire the brain....all they do is inhibit behavior that others find inconvenient,(particularly in kids and institutionilized persons who have no say)
Some autistics traits that they are surpressing with medication could be better treated through a change in the individuals environment(things that trigger melt-downs caused by over or under stimulation). Some of the traits do not need to be surpressed but others need to educate themselves and learn a little tolerance...(I think their is a medication they could take for this....?)
But here is the other side of the arguement.....
I don't want to be on SSI. I want to function as indipendently as I can(basically because I have been in the "system" before and don't like ignorant, apathetic ,poorly trained individuals making life choices for me).To function in a world whose brains are wired differently then mine, I find it most helpful to be on a medication that lessons the level of depression and anxiety it creates. It was difficult for me to have social contact or melt-dons and maintain employment....for me,I chose the lesser of evils..meds over SSI. They don't work ith out other adjustments in my life. I also work over nights and avoid soial situations when possible. I keep my life as simple as possible and learned to avoid my special interests when I have some "responsibility" ,like going to work in a few hours. It's a balancing act and some times I fall off the rope but the meds help me maintain more balance then before I was taking them. I don't cry every time I am over whelmed, confused, angry or stressed.
There is no blanket statement...all meds are bad for all autistics. We each have unique environments to deal with and life circumstances. If I did not have to work or be in social situations, I don't think I would be on the meds, but that is not my reality. Some people have even higher levels of anxiety and other "traits" that get in the way of their functioning in the ways they want. The crux of the debate should be that the individual is allowed to choice for themselves what work for them without shame from NT's or auties.

I started Celexa after two depressive episodes in May, June, July... went on it on about July 15, it worked immediately and took away the social anxiety 100%... depression it took longer for, but helped gradually, and worked for a while, but eventually the depression that was threatening to come out the whole time caught up with it; it just slowed it down. So they doubled the dosage to 40 mg. It really did work. I had very unfun withdrawal from it. After the withdrawal was over, two more terrifying black-hole episodes. I think I was doing fine on the 40mg but might have needed something for ADD or a little bit more Celexa or something else. If you feel up to figuring out the reason why the meds aren't working you often can.nIn my case it was too little too late, and the depression caught up with it and surpassed it; I had needed a higher dose to begin with.
