I hate my medication. There is no reason for me to be on it. This one and ones i have been on have caused extreme nueropsychological and nuerocoginitive damage. I am worried that even getting off it wont result in any increase in mental function and i may be forced to go through life as less than a whole person and as a shadow of my former self.
any ideas on recovering mental function?

You don't say what you are on...how long, how much, or what they were meant to help.

I am on a cocktail that was initially meant for one thing, that works for something else entirely.

While I think going off meds are generally something you should discuss with your doctor, there are some, I agree that are worse than the disease or symptom they are meant to alleviate.

All for no good reason. i had a nervous breakdown and brain inflamation 6 year ago and was misdxd bipolar was never able to shake the dx. basically i was medicated because i was medicated before. i kept winding up in the hospital because i was having allergic or toxic reaction the medications and/ or my father or brother would start a fight with me.

Okay...

First things first...

Risperidal...or risperidone...is a reasonable thing to be on...but your dosage is higher than I would have expected. It can lead to sedation and lethargy. So if you aren't liking it...perhaps talking to your doctor about lessening the dosage might be an idea.

Regardless, you aren't going to want to go off of that all at once unless you want to make yourself mighty sick. The withdrawal symptoms are fierce.

I don't blame you about the lithium. I have yet to meet anyone who has had a positive experience on it. Sadly it seems that many doctors try it out as the old tried and true, and many patients tell them to get bent and go off of it.

Splitting the risperidone is also accepted practice and reasonable. What about it is bothering you? Is it sedation? or something else?

Risperidone works beautifully if combined with an SSRI (a type of anti-depressant) such as celexa, effexor or ciprolex. Celexa also has the added benefit of working well as an anti-anxiety agent. Again, considering what you've been on in the past...it's an idea.

How long have you been on Risperidone? I also have to go back and look at what else you are on again before continuing this.

Okay.

Visteril...basically a tranquilizer used for axiety...can have dependency issues and has a sedating effect....

That could be why you are so lost and hazy...

That's alot of sedation going on. Why you don't want to take the medication anymore.

Talk to your doctor. Talk about going on an anti-anxiety med such as the ones I described in the last post. They are longer acting, and don't create a dependancy. They control anxiety, can be titred (dosage adjusted) to work with your risperidone/personal metabolism.

If you don't like your meds, there are alternatives. You need to slow down the number of meds, adjust and refocus. You can work it out. I know where you are coming from because I was there. Get it to a reasonable level where you can deal with it. YOu will be SO much happier and able to function and deal.

PM if you need to.

I had negative reactions only when I went off mine (and am still off it). I totally get your fear of being a shadow of your former self; I was worried depressive episodes would do that to me and they did for a while. So I became really hypertalkative (wanting to be hyperactive but that's not socially acceptable) and appeared to have severe anxiety. Well, I did, but for a very good reason! The right proportion of anxiety helps you get away from stalkers chasing you, beat up people about to hijack the plane, do well in tests, whatever.

So don't ignore yourself or your instincts that this isn't good.
