I was just sitting here thinking about my "other mom"...
When I was in middle and high school, I had this one friend (my only friend, still, sometimes) named Sara who always stuck up for me and fought for me when I was being picked on. I'd go to her house after school most of the time since my own parents didn't have time for me or it always seemed like I was doing something wrong. Her mom, whom I affectionately call "Mama Kim", was this funky hippie woman who loved taking in and caring for stray critters and stray kids. I learned a lot of life lessons and social skills from her (as well as the fine art of not taking crap from anyone), and to this day she is still a driving force in my life. I learned how to cook and sew, how to drive on the interstate without freaking out and how to light a fire on the grill. Simple life lessons, but oh so valuable. It's weird the kind of love I feel for this woman...more than my own mother.
I just don't know where I'd be without her, and I'm so thankful she was there for me growing up.
Did any of you guys have a mentor like this?
