I was just sitting here thinking about my "other mom"...

When I was in middle and high school, I had this one friend (my only friend, still, sometimes) named Sara who always stuck up for me and fought for me when I was being picked on. I'd go to her house after school most of the time since my own parents didn't have time for me or it always seemed like I was doing something wrong. Her mom, whom I affectionately call "Mama Kim", was this funky hippie woman who loved taking in and caring for stray critters and stray kids. I learned a lot of life lessons and social skills from her (as well as the fine art of not taking crap from anyone), and to this day she is still a driving force in my life. I learned how to cook and sew, how to drive on the interstate without freaking out and how to light a fire on the grill. Simple life lessons, but oh so valuable. It's weird the kind of love I feel for this woman...more than my own mother.

I just don't know where I'd be without her, and I'm so thankful she was there for me growing up.

Did any of you guys have a mentor like this?

Kinda. My stepdad filled in the parenting gaps my dad left. He though he could beat AS out of me, so, yea.

My stepdad let me 'steal' this little jeep thing from him, and I taught myself to drive. It never ran out of gas in 2 years, so I know he knew. But it was pretty much understood to be a thing we never spoke about.

My friends mum is also made of win. She understands me, and I can talk to her about anything, and always feel better afterwards. Think I'm pregnant? This lady will buy me the test, and the one time it did come up positive (false) she really helped me calm down and think about it rationally.

She's my sounding board, and that's way more than enough.

Other than a parent -- no. My mom was as you describe really, the point by which all of me was created.

I just wanted to share that I'm happy you found someone to model.

Well now I'm confused, I think that's what I mean to say, but hopefully you understand what I'm trying to convey.

Not concentrated in one person, no. Being a military brat we moved all the time. Even when we came back to the states after dad was honorably discharged, we still moved around alot every year or every few years.

I've had some friends teach me a few things my parents didn't teach me. And I learned by observation and research. No real mentors or adopted parents though.

My teacher shannon has come and visit me twice and calls me everyday since I've been in the hospital. She's been highly supportive to me throughout my difficult high school years, gotten people suspended for even slightly picking on me (she likes to exaggerate things) and even offers to let me spend the night at her house when my dad was being an a**hole.

Of course, she could never replace my mother, I love my mom to death.

Yes!
My grade eight teacher really helped me with my depression, and prevented me from killing myself. We're still friends to this day :D:D:D
