My brother went in for an eye exam 5 days ago...and it was discovered that he has the same eye disease that I do. Not to mention that he's ALSO losing his hearing when he went to his ear doctor.

So,I had to go get MY ears examed...and guess what? I'm going deaf! I forgot what the name of the disorder was called--I believe it has something to do with the thing in your inner ear that leads to your brain--but yep we've both got it.

Now,my mother is chewing up HIS ass, saying,"God,I thought you would actually be normal. You're going to be a freak!"

"Jainey's got a gun...Jainey's got a gun..."

I'm sorry to hear that about both you and your brother. Do you know how much his eye sight is expected to deteriorate? Perhaps it won't be that much. Likewise do you know how much your hearing may deteriorate? They have some amazing hearing aids these days.

I honestly can't imagine what you are going through, even with the eye sight alone. I really hope you can retain some of your sight and hearing. Make sure to do as much research as possible into all possible options while you are able to. New advances are constantly being churned out, it is even possible to replace eyes with cameras now. I'm sure it is all very expensive for the time being but in time it might be affordable. I don't know what you have so maybe there is already treatments available for it, I'm guessing you have looked into that though.

Good luck in solving your problems.

I have no words to say how sorry I am, for both of you. I cannot know what this is for you.
Do you think you and your brother can 'team up?' Are you two close? I think potentially you could be invaluable to each other.
I know you're grieving and there's no quick and easy way to grieve your loss.

Just.....Lab Pet = tears for Space Case + her brother :flower:

Space Case, just wondering....I like how/what you write. Can you write & document everything you know sense? Later, you can know vicariously. I've know one who is blind/deaf and she says her other senses, inside her, attentuate and sharpen. Plus, you're an Aspie. You have much strength in you.

According to emedicine.com the amount of hearing loss can vary. There is also this line,"Complete resolution of all vestibular symptoms and signs was achieved in 8 of the 9 patients after the canal was plugged", so at least some of the symptoms can be treated. There were also mentions of other treatments and if you google it there are probably websites with more in depth info.

I hope you are able to do something to retain some level of hearing. I really don't know what to say other than good luck, I am horrible at expressing sympathy.

I don't understand how your mother could say such things to anyone in this situation. Losing your hearing is bad enough but being called a freak isn't going to make it better. My great grandmother has that problem, she hears alright with her hearing aid. Try and finding some hearing aids, it may work for you and your brother as well.

Sad for you both, I hope it is treatable. Your mother should not have said what she did.

"Your mother should not have said what she did."

NOT ONLY THAT, BUT SINCE IT'S OBVIOUSLY GENETIC, YOU MAY HAVE INHERITED IT FROM HER.

Awww sweety. I will tell you something that might give you hope. When I was 14, a doctor told me that he thought I was going deaf. The doctor told another doctor to check my ear as well, and they both thought the exact same thing. I ended up making an appointment with an audiologist and he told me that my hearing was 100% fine. Maybe you aren't going deaf after all.......

Yes,Helen Keller was deaf-blind.

And I find it extremely offensive what Dracula said: "We'll call you Helen Keller from now on."
