I recently went to a party centered around MarioKart Wii. The idea was to set up a wireless network and have multiple Wii systems present so we could have 6-12 person races online (as opposed to just 4 person races otherwise.) Setting up the network, then getting all the systems connected took around two hours, and I did most of the work because I was the only one who knew how to do it. Well, after all this work, nobody seemed to want to start an online game. I didn't let it get to me, but after nobody wanted to play with me on my system, I started to get really annoyed, and more than a little confused.

There was a large widescreen and a smaller regular screen television in the main room, with my system hooked up to the smaller one. In an adjacent, cramped and awful smelling room (too close to the bathroom) was an even smaller television. I can understand people wanting to play on the large screen, but why were they lining up to play in the tiny smelly room when mine was left alone? Not only was my system in a better location, but I had more features unlocked in the game than the others. Even more, the couple times I did get someone to play with, I held back while playing (something that is extremely difficult for me to do) so as not to discourage anyone.

Long story short, I left the party feeling confused, frustrated and more than a little insulted. Most of these people, including the hosts, are people I've known for nearly 20 years now, and I can't even begin to speculate why they acted the way they did. Does anyone have any insights that might help?

It's possible they thought you were too good a player and didn't want to hold you back.

Although, it sounds more like the game wasn't the point of the party, but the socialising was. In that case, be glad they didn't try and sit with you and chat. It gets annoying :P

And the small room with the tiny tv next to the bathroom! It sounds like you went to my old place... but those guys are a***holes...

maybe they did not want to play the game with someone that was good at it.

I thought of that, but that doesn't make any sense. If they didn't want to play with me, then why invite me in the first place? They know I don't socialize well, and since nobody was playing with me then my not being there would not have made any difference whatsoever. The really sad part is that most of my video games are multi-player in the hopes that someone will actually want to play with me. I guess I'll just have to wait until my niece is old enough to participate before that happens.

From my experience I'd have to say that you already know why you were there. You said it. I just bolded it. The same reason I used to get invited to someone's house when they wanted to show me their new computer. I'm sorry.
