There were studies made (back in the '50's, I think) which indicate the full sleepis not necessary for good health. If one lies quietly and calms one's mind as much as possible, the rest is good enough.
They did research with relaxation techniques and meditation. Each was found to be helpful in quieting the mind and allowing rest. Additionally, they found that these techniques also led to sleep in many cases. Essentially, lying quietly and RELAXING the mind was found to be as good as, or better than, the non-preccription sleep aids of those days.
I often have trouble shutting down my mind. Some is my AS and some is mild PTSD. I have found that, with some meditation technigues, I can move my mind from whatever it is racing about to something more relaxing. I still get only about two hours of sleep, then up for an hour , then about two hours sleep, then... I've just decided this is normal FOR ME and go with the flow. Some of my most inovative work has been done during that hour between sleeps.
I know this sounds similar to the old, tired NT mantra of "Just relax." However, it works for me. I just stopped stressing over it.
