Do you go to a Psychiatrist for meds or to an MD?
I went to a medical doctor and I told him to change my thiroid medication because I have anxiety. (levotyroxine increases anxiety levels) So he said he will find me another med but first I have to take medication for anxiety.
He says I'm not supposed to be out there having high levels of anxiety.
I've only seen psychologists lately for my mental health and since I have decided not to take any meds for depression and anxiety they did not send me to a Psychiatrist.
has anyone done this before?
A psychiatrist is an MD who specializes in the brain - its anatomy, physiology, chemistry, and impact on human behavior. So psychiatrists are doctors with a neurological specialty. I assume the MD you see about your thyroid is a general practitioner aka internist, or an endocrinologist? If s/he suggested you see a psychiatrist s/he was simply referring you to another MD with a specialty related to what you are experiencing.
Even if the thyroid doctor did not refer you to a psychiatrist, seeing one could be a good idea. Because of their specialized training, they know more about anxiety medications (what's new, what's old, what works for what types of anxiety, what is turning out not to work, etc.) than a doctor who is not a psychiatrist or neurologist. Just try to get a referral from a doctor you respect so that you end up seeing a good psychiatrist.
Also, some psychiatrists charge a lot. And I think there are certain psychiatric nursing degrees that give one the knowledge and permission to prescribe medication. These people tend not to charge quite as much as psychiatrists, but they are often just as well-informed about the latest news in psychiatry. (Someone correct me if I'm wrong about this.)
