Subtext or not subtext?
So a guy i'm going to be doing some work for asked me to cover in his shop for the day. He was going on holiday and one of his staff was attending a wedding which meant there would only be one person on the shop floor, leaving the shop empty if she had to go to the back room for stock etc.
When i got to the shop the lady working there said that it had been a quiet week and was, thus far, a quiet day so she wouldn't need me for the whole day (only if she had to leave the shop or something) my regular job is across the road so i can get on with some paperwork while i'm not needed for this 'second' job.
All this seemed reasonable to me and the lady was polite about saying it. When i went back to my regular job and said why i was there i got told that she was subtely saying that she didn't want me there and that i should be insulted and that she would probably tell the guy i was meant to be working for that i had shown up, decided it wasn't busy enough and left.
So now i have no idea if this lady was being rude to me and i couldn't read between the lines, or if my regular workmates are just paranoid about a persons intentions.
I don't know what i expect to achieve with this thread, or if this is the right forum to post it in but i feel like crying and needed to get it off my chest.
Impossible to tell really. I doubt your workmates could guess her intentions just from your second-hand report of it, not being there themselves. They are just guessing really. If she did want you out of the way there could be many reasons for that. Maybe she is up to no good, stealing or something.
I suppose you just have to wait and see.
