Well I got an official diagnosis today... and yea.. nothing earth shattering... AS... or high functioning AS as he put it... because I can hold a job...

So how come now I want to go home and shoot myself in the head? It's like I've been sick and I know I've been sick and with what... but no one ever told me officially... so now that it is official... all hope is gone that it is something I can get over. I feel like I've been given a death sentence.

You made it this far, you'll be okay.
I just got it officialized last year. Kind of a relief, in a way.... better to have a reason than to just be "wrong."

Don't shoot yourself.
You were given a death sentence at birth, everyone was. Life: It's sexually transmitted and always fatal.

Hang in there, you'll ajust. You wouldn't have made it this far if you couldn't.

There are plenty of ways in which, as being officially diagnosed, it'll make your life a hell of a lot easier 8)
My friend gets a free support worker and free public transport amongst other things!

Why do so many people assume such things are "free?" There is no such thing as a free lunch...your friend may not be paying
for her support worker and free public transportation but, someone else is...by way of government taxes.

I recognise the frustration that comes with a positive diagnosis but advise you not to dwell on it too much. Now you know who you are you can start to make meaningful strategies for the rest of your life. For instance, you can now start to train yourself in all those skills that you and everybody else thought you should have an innate ability in. OK, so there is a question over whether you can ever learn to empathise with others in the way that NTs seem to think is essential to be called a human, but communication, sociability and flexibility of thought can all be developed when you recognise you need to learn them - these are areas of impairment not exclusion!

A diagnosis is only the end of the road if you see AS as an incurable disease - which it is not. It is a condition, many traits if which can be reconditioned...

Well.

I know that, coming from a sixteen-year-old, it might not sound that great, but I think it could be worse. I'm not happy as heck, but it could be worse... and I might be lucky, because of my diagnosis, to leave that idiotic institution I call home.

Well, poor them :P I'm perfectly aware of this by the way. Just 'free' sounds a lot nicer a term than 'fully government subsidised'.

I see a big difference between a 16 year old and someone closing rapidly in on 40... sorry no offense is intended. Sure, things can be "recondition" but the fact is who is going to want to put up with someone at 40 who has never had a relationship?

Well I was introduced to the woman who later became my wife three days after my 40th birthday and got my dx at the age of 42, so we have more in common than you think...

Thanks... :)

It doesn't help things in the short term but at least it removes that large stone from the back of the hope fairy.
