I recently lost whom I thought was the love of my life and, at the suggestion of a friend studying psychology, was told I should look into Aspergers. While still trying to find someone who can officially diagnosis me, reading things online and youtube videos I realize that if I do not have AS I have something very similar. It makes me really sad because the issues and reasons that my ex left me were standard issues I have seen described in AS/non-AS relationships. Unfortunately I can't find anyone to see if that is what it really is. I am just really sad because I feel like if my parents paid attention to me as a kid that they might have had my diagnosised earlier and maybe could have saved me a lot of pain in my life.

I fell your pain man. You are lucky to have found someone you at least liked, even if you could not be with that person. Many of us are not even capable of liking people, which is much much worse. You are young healthy guy, you got still plenty of life left in you, things will pick up as you become an older man.

It is tough. See she also had a child whom I had raised for over a year (he was one month old when we got together) and so it really hurts having lost what felt like a family because of my "real" family not paying attention.

It wasn't until 1994 that the DSM IV added Asperger Syndrome, and still it took years for AS to be recognized by professionals... not much your parents could have done really, more likely you would have been mis-diagnosed and medicated, probably ritalin for ADHD which was popular at the time. I would have been on it if my parents went along with what the school was telling them.

Did you talk with your ex about the possibility of you having AS?

My ex has instituted a no contact with me and when she left she said I was emotionally abusive and the mutual friend we had(my only friend out side of her)sided with her and left too. The friend still reads my myspace where I have posted about the possibility but neither won't contact me or respond to contacts from me.
