Accepting oneself is a very hard thing to do, and especially to do more and more over time. For example, if you still care what strangers think of you when they see you in public, then that is a degree to which you do not accept yourself. My own goal is to grow into a person who never acts shy toward others about who I am, without infringing on anyone else at the same time. Hopefully I'll find that perfect balance one day.

Self-Acceptance Project topic

I go through very brief periods where I find my self-acceptance is lower than at other times. I have always accepted my AS, since being diagnosed. :D But hell can be others who are critical of those who are different. The worse thing has been job loss, and how difficult it is to find employment in this rough global downturn. I am optimistic but impatient, and this can and does affect self-acceptance. But I persevere. :)

Let's call this thread the official one (of the two identical threads WP created), since the mods STILL haven't removed the duplicate one.

I like who I am and have a very clear sense of my purpose in life and my goals.

However, I get depressed and confused by all the obstacles that stand in the way of expressing myself and achieving my goals. It's like I have a clear picture of where I want to be, but I have no idea how to get there.

I hear it's the opposite for most people - expressing themselves and achieving goals is easy, but they lack a clear sense of identity, or self-confidence, or purpose.

I am God! Oh wait! That is what my adorable bird thinks, he believes HE is God! How absolutely adorable, a bird with a delusion. Tiny (my macaw) really accepts himself and believes all these weird things. Awww. Bow to him now!

I feel the same way.
I do know some steps of how to get there, but I get stuck when I actually come close to doing them, and I might put them aside for a week, month over even a year.

I chose 6 because I do like myself, my mind especially. There are certain characteristics I'd like to change about myself though.

There is a difference here to accepting oneself and accepting society. You can totally accept yourself, whilst still caring how someone perceives you - for pragmatic reasons if nothing else.

It's funny, I actually did say what you just wrote, but in the duplicate thread. I guess I'll amend this thread's OP with that now...

Good topic Ragtime, I guess I am a 5 on the poll, reasonably happy with the world and people.

I voted a 6 but I don't like everybody else.

I see us as mere animals competing with each other to succeed, there really isn't any success, if you have success it lasts for a while and then the empty void returns and then you feel you need something more. It's like chasing a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

I've got no problem with accepting myself, maybe it is how you judge others, as long as I feel someone means well and is a good person I'm accepting of them.

I voted 6, it's taken me a long time and a lot of effort to get to this stage, and it's finally paid off. :D

Till about a year or so ago I would have voted 1/2 mostly.
