I must ask because I'm both angry and worried that the thief could get away... Have any of you gone through identity theft? Please tell me I don't have to pay what I don't owe. All I needed, was a new car, and... wow.. Just for breathing, someone takes it out on me and robs me. A collection adgency just mailed me at my new address, asking for 984 dollars. ouch! All I'm trying to do, is get a life for God sakes, and someone always, always tries to screw me to death.

I'm sorry but I don't understand what happened. Someone stole your identity when you did something while trying to get a car loan? Somebody stole your credit card# and a collection agency is after you?

If it is the credit card, you need to notify the card company that the charges aren't yours and report the card stolen so the thief can't keep using your credit. If it was a debit card like a visa check card, tell your bank & they'll freeze the card and issue one with a different # (I know from experience, that happened to me).

I don't understand exactly how your identy got stolen - what part of your identy? Does the thief have your ss# (assuming you're american and have an ss#), your birth date, what?

I had my 'identity' stolen once and $9,999 charged to my name on a American Express card they GOT in my name. I just sorta laughed when they called me, and could prove the charges were not mine. The thieves got my social security number when I lived in New York City, and I had lived and had a job in Sioux City, IA all the time they had been running up bills in my name.

I got a print out of all three credit reports and went over them to find out what I charged and what was charged to me. I went to the bank and got what I spent and to whom. I proved what I paid for and when and had this to show to the companies that turned me over to the collection agency, NOT the collection agency. Legal Aid in your area can help you know what to gather. It is not fun and I know it is a real b***h to get through.

keep posting when you want to, you can get a lot of people that were in the same boat once.

it is possible this thief will get caught because once the bank give the money back to account,they're not going to wait around trying to get back the money they have lost.
also,it is likely this is completely nothing personal-people who get this done to them are just a bunch of words for the thieves to get what they want,there are supposed to be forums on the internet where hackers swap and sell card details of others,so there is nothing 'human' and personal in it,they are lazy scum.
am hope do get money back soon.

dad had it done a few months ago,someone had got hold of his debit card details and cleared out his account,tsb put it all back in after a month as the money taken out was tracked to america,and it was used in educational and clothes shops.
the anti fraud lady at tsb told him one in three people get their card details/identity stolen.

also,another thing the bank did,was phone him up when the thief had used his account several times-to say they suspect identity theft,think they then froze his account to stop this thief from getting anymore,they seemed to know dads pattern of spending and knew it wasnt him-is this not done by all banks?

that does not seem right at all,guilty till proven innocent? some banks must be better with this stuff than others.

Thanks everybody. I do feel a little better now. Even though we had to go to the car place and fill out more forms today. My mom now had to put 1360 more on her credit card, so she's annoyed to. At least we are getting lowered rates from this.
