I posted this in The Haven as incentive to keep this from degenerating into a flame war.

Several of us WP members toss around the word "Emo" as if it were just another title or label.
I've even started a blog entitled, "You Could Be Emo If" and I add one or two new entries to it each day. Yet at least one WP member has claimed that it is anologous to using the infamous "N-Word" when referring to members of African descent. This person does not seem to have any "Emo" characteristics of their own, but their claim may still have some validity, even if there is no word other than "Emo" to describe the Emo personality.

So cast your vote and leave a comment, please. Let us all know how you feel about the word "Emo."

Thanx!

It is a word like any other... and so is "destruction," which is what we are going to do to them (just kidding, sorry.)

Although there really are emos, I try not to carry that insult around so much like I use to. While there are some people who get off on getting attention for their self destructive behavior, there are those who actually are self-destructive due to chemical imbalances in the brain or unresolved issues that happened to them in the past.

Major Depression Disorder are not one of those minor moments of depression where you can just snap out of it. I have it myself and it's very hard to see through the eyes of someone who doesn't have it. I tried for a long time by taking the advice of snapping out of it but it never seem to work. In fact I felt worse. I'm on meds now which helps a great deal. So sometimes there are those who need attention but need it from a doctor not a person.

* BUMP *

I'm bumping up this thread because WP members seem to be more interested in polls about penetrative sex, playing games with the alphabet, writing death notes, blocking the people of Quebec, gay marriage, practicing to be perfect, gun control, the morality of organ donations, making a personal change, the existance of the human soul, the Irish economy, Strapples' avatar and other general conversations than whether or not a mere three-letter word may be offensive.

I think it's vastly misused, and abused.

Meh...I guess I am just to old to get it. I was all moody and dressed in black as a teen, but it was 80's punk back then.

I do not sleep...my mind has been muddy...the holidays make me blue. Maybe I am emo? Or, maybe just still 80's punk?

* BUMP *

This is the last "Bump" I'm giving this thread and poll.

It's interesting to note that 77% of those who've responded to this poll at the time of this post are in agreement that the word "Emo" is neither offensive or insensitive.

Most seem to think that it's a valid label for people with the "Emo" personality.

About a quarter of the respondents are actually proud to bear the label of "Emo."

Only one respondent thinks that people who use the word "Emo" - even if they only think the word - are pigs.

Aren't you glad there is no Thought Police?

I think one can do better that 'emo' in finding a descriptor; add in that I don't like that it creates a negative association with emotions in general. Otherwise, meh.

Do you have any alternates to suggest?

I can relate to the way this emo in the way she's sitting hunched over and looking down. Meh..I kind of identify with Claire's statement. This year's given me the blues and I tend to gravitate to the color black... Other than that, I agree with 886 that it gets overly used and abused sometimes. Basically it's just a subculture of some sort really.
